Portadown man with 184 convictions to have bail application ‘taken into consideration’

Craigavon Courthouse

A Portadown man with a “serious record” has sought bail after being charged with two counts of assault on police and resisting arrest.

Jody Curry, of no fixed abode, has 184 criminal convictions and was appearing in Craigavon Magistrates’ Court from Maghaberry, via videolink, on Friday.

A police constable stated her opposition to granting the 29-year-old bail, saying that he has breached bail 18 times, and had breached “almost every bail condition he’s had”.

She also expressed concern that Curry could reoffend if granted bail, as he had been released from a previous sentence at the beginning of February, only to be back in custody again at the end of the month.

Defence solicitor Chris Logue asked that Curry be “given a chance”, stating that he had pleaded guilty “early on” to the assault charges.

He added: “My man was at the scene [of another crime taking police]. The co-accused is facing much more serious charges and has already been granted bail.”

“I’m asking you to give him a chance. He is currently trying to get an address where he can reside.”

Deputy District Judge Greg McCourt said that given Curry’s “serious record” work hasn’t been done yet where “I’d be confident enough to release him on bail. I give the defendant credit for admitting to the assaults.”

Judge McCourt said he would take the bail application under consideration and adjourned the case until April 13.
