Portadown’s Lorraine steps up for a great cause!

Joining Irish rugby legend Rory Best and a select group of business leaders, Lorraine will walk a gruelling nine marathons in nine days.

Portadown resident and Tax Partner at leading accountancy firm BDO Northern Ireland Lorraine Nelson, will be putting her best foot forward for Cancer Fund for Children this Autumn when she completes the ‘Rory’s Miles 2 Mayo’ Challenge.

Joining Irish rugby legend Rory Best and a select group of business leaders, Lorraine will walk a gruelling nine marathons in nine days. The journey spans over 235 miles across the island of Ireland, raising vital funds and awareness for Cancer Fund for Children.

Lorraine will be putting her physical and mental endurance to the test, taking around 50,000 steps daily across Derry/Londonderry, Belfast, Dublin, Kildare, Carlow, Cork, Limerick and Galway before finishing in Cong, Co Mayo.

Lorraine has committed to raising £50,000 for Cancer Fund for Children, the official charity partner of BDO Northern Ireland.

No stranger to high-intensity training, Lorraine is a keen rower and member of Portadown Boat Club, as well as being a regular at 80:20 Health & Fitness, also in Portadown.

Her fundraising campaign is already in full swing, following a successful charity screening of The Devil Wears Prada 2. Next on her list of initiatives is a Hyrox-style fundraiser in Portadown’s 80:20, which will see teams of two compete for prizes and pride in a series of fitness challenges on June 19.

“Joining Rory’s Miles 2 Mayo is an absolutely incredible opportunity,” Lorraine said.

“Whilst I have no doubt it will be challenging, I believe it will also be very humbling. I am looking forward to the camaraderie with the group and that great sense of achievement as we trek our way across Ireland to raise vital funds and awareness for a wonderful cause.

“Cancer Fund for Children provides emotional, social and therapeutic support to families affected by cancer. Having recently visited Daisy Lodge, the charity’s short break centre in Newcastle, I have seen firsthand just how valuable their services are.

“With every step of those nine marathons, I know I’ll be inspired by the work the charity does and the many people who rely on their support,” Lorraine said.

Maria Small, Partnership and Philanthopy Advisor at Cancer Fund for Children, added: “We are absolutely delighted to have Lorraine joining us for the Rory’s Miles 2 Mayo event this September.

“A highly accomplished athlete and an exceptional business leader, Lorraine is a true inspiration to everyone at Cancer Fund for Children. She embodies the very spirit of this challenge – strength, resilience, determination and drive. Her passion and commitment reflect the power of individuals and organisations coming together to make a meaningful difference.

“We are thrilled to be working alongside Lorraine and the team at BDO, our valued new charity partner, as together we strive to ensure that no child faces cancer alone.”
