Officers involved in stopping and searching a vehicle which led to the discovery of £30,000 worth of cannabis have been praised.
A man and woman have been arrested after the discovery of around £30,000 worth of cannabis in a car.
Police made the two arrests following the search of a vehicle in Portadown on Monday.
“Again I find myself commending the PSNI for their proactive fight against drugs and the drug dealers in the Upper Bann area,” said Ulster Unionist MLA Doug Beattie.
“Most recently the arrest of a man and a woman – both aged 21 – for being in possession of £30,000 worth of cannabis.
“This success, brought about by the search of a car in Portadown, highlights how the fight against those who would peddle drugs on our streets is critical.”
He added: “Society needs to be absolutely clear on this point. Those who deal drugs do so to entice a new younger generation into a life of addition and there should be no room for anyone to say smoking cannabis is nothing more than recreational drug use – it is not.
“It is destroying lives, leading to crime, acting as a gateway to other drugs and driving our young people into experimenting with other drugs including prescription drugs, speed, cannabis and other more dangerous hallucinogens.
“We as a society must tackle this issue together.
“Although the PSNI are on the front line in the fight against the illegal drugs trade it is up to civic society to show that those who deal drugs are not welcome in our communities and those who take drugs should be viewed as victims of the drug dealers.”
