Bleary Business and Community Centre has once again been transformed into a magical winter wonderland for the hugely popular Relaxed Christmas sessions, designed especially for children with sensory processing issues, autism, or special educational needs (SEN) and their families.
This year, Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council made the free event even bigger than previous years with 320 sessions held over 12 days in December, during which families were welcomed into a calm and supportive environment where children could experience the magic of Christmas at their own pace.
Upon arrival, visitors were guided through a festive journey to meet Santa and Mrs Claus, who presented each child with a special gift. The experience continued in a dedicated sensory room, offering a range of inclusive activities including arts and crafts and multi-sensory installations.
Lord Mayor, Alderman Stephen Moutray, attended one of the sessions and praised the initiative: “It was a real pleasure to attend one of our Relaxed Christmas events, celebrating the true spirit of the season in a welcoming, calm and inclusive environment. These events reflect our council’s commitment to ensuring everyone can enjoy festive moments in a way that feels comfortable, accessible and supportive. A lovely reminder that the magic of Christmas is for everyone.”
First introduced seven years ago, the Relaxed Christmas event has become a cornerstone of the Council’s festive programme and an important part of its ‘Inclusive ABC’ commitment. This year’s sessions sold out in advance, highlighting both the demand for this service and the joy it brings to families.
One parent shared their heartfelt feedback from last year’s event: “It’s wonderful to have an event where families like ours can feel included and not isolated.”
While another said: “It was the most unbelievable relaxed Santa experience I have been to. My son went from clinging to me to happily walking up to Santa himself.”
