Restricted driver almost twice the alcohol limit crashes into fence in Portadown

Portadown incident

A motorist who crashed into a fence in Portadown, before trying to drive on was arrested after police discovered he was nearly twice the legal drink-drive limit.

Road Policing Officers, who were on patrol in the Brownstown Road area, witnessed the vehicle mount a kerb directly in front of them before colliding with the fence. Despite the impact, the driver continued on.

When stopped by officers, the driver insisted he had not been drinking. However, a roadside breath test told a different story.

He was subsequently arrested for a number of offences, including drink-driving, and taken into custody. There, an evidential breath test showed he was almost double the legal limit.

Police confirmed the driver – who has held his licence for less than a year – spent the night in custody and will face court in due course.

A spokesperson warned: “The driver will have to attend court in the near future, where he is likely to lose his driving licence – a driving licence which he has held for less than a year.

“The message is simple – never, ever drink and drive!”
