Tributes have been paid following the sudden death of a popular Portadown businessman, Trevor Henderson.
Trevor, who owned and ran The Port chippy for more than 30 years, passed away following a short illness on August 23, 2026.
Through the doors of the chip shop on Church Street Trevor came to know many a face over the years, taking the time to get to know those who frequented his business and becoming a “true friend” in several cases.
He opened the chip shop back in 1995 with his wife Vivien and together they employed hundreds of local people over the years. One former employee of the couple called Trevor “the best boss ever” in tribute and said he even “paid for my childminder”, a genuine and heartfelt gesture that clearly demonstrates his inherent warmth and made all the difference to his valued staff member.
The Port was more than just a takeaway to Trevor, his family, team and customers. It was a place of “laughs and stories” where countless memories were made.
The business has been closed for several days and will continued to remain so until further notice, as those who loved him take time to process their loss.
Paying tribute to their founder, The Port shared via social media: “He loved The Port, but most of all he loved the people who came through the door. Many customers became friends, and Trevor was always happiest having a chat with the people he had got to know along the way.
“Anyone who knew Trevor will also know how much he loved his football. He was a devoted Portadown supporter and a lifelong Spurs fan, and football was never far from the conversation.
“We know how many people in Portadown knew and loved Trevor, and we know many of you will have your own stories and memories of him.
“Thank you to everyone who has supported The Port over the last 30 years and, more importantly, for the friendship you showed Trevor along the way. A special thank you also to the dedicated staff, whose hard work and loyalty meant so much to Trevor.
“He will be very deeply missed.”
Seizing the opportunity to share a fond memory of Trevor, one person added: “We are absolutely heartbroken. Trevor was so much more than the man behind the best chippy around — he was a true friend and someone who meant so much to our family.”
The owner of neighbouring business, Danny’s Chippy said: “Heartbroken to hear this. I genuinely couldn’t believe it when I heard the news. He was an absolute gentleman and will be deeply missed. May God rest his soul in eternal peace.
“Thinking of his entire family, friends and the wider community at this incredibly difficult time. He provided so many people with lovely food and was a much-loved part of the community. May his memory live on forever.”
Trevor was also a valued member of the Portadown BB Old Boys Association, where he will also be deeply missed.
A death notice described him as the beloved husband of Vivien, dearly loved dad of Colleen (Alex) and Dillon (Meg), cherished grandad of Jayce and Diana, much loved brother of Noel, dear brother-in-law of Noreen, Malcolm (Trish) and Aldrina (Gary) also a loving uncle.
Trevor’s home and Funeral will be strictly private.
Friends are welcome at “The Old Meeting House” on Wednesday from 6pm to 9pm.
