An unstoppable nonagenarian has raised over £2,000 for causes close to his heart by completing a walk across Portadown with the help of his community.
Leslie Wells – who celebrated his 90th birthday in January – chose to complete a sponsored walk from St Mark’s in Portadown to Moneypenny’s towpath on May 17.
The entire distance – there and back – totalled approximately six miles and for those miles, Leslie aimed initially to raise just £100 in sponsorship.
The monies raised through the effort are to be split equally between St Mark’s Church and Cancer Research.
Leslie throughout his life has been a member of St Mark’s Church – who will be celebrating their 200 year anniversary next year.
When completing his walk on Saturday, many of his fellow parishioners turned out in support, walking some – or all – of the miles alongside him under an intense heat that’s rarely to be seen in Portadown!
A representative for St Mark’s Church congratulated Leslie on completion of the effort, saying: “Congratulations Leslie, such a pleasure and a privilege to have joined you today.”
As someone who has himself battled cancer alongside various other health issues, Leslie chose Cancer Research to be the second recipient of funds.
The walk was completed to much celebration on the afternoon of Saturday, May 17, and so far the effort has raised a total of £2,110 – a fair bit more than his very humble £100 initial target!
