A Portadown woman who drove off after reversing into another car was “living up to the standard female driver jokes”, according to a District Judge.
A judge asked how the 33-year-old could not see the car given that she has “a head with eyes that swivels”.
Karolina Strekowska, of Baltylum Meadows, pleaded guilty to having a defective tyre and failing to remain or report an accident at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
On July 10 police were alerted to a car which reversed into another on the Gilford Road, Portadown, before driving off.
Officers used the licence plate given by a witness to the lead them to the defendant’s address.
Police noted that one of the tyres on the vehicle was defective.
During a notebook interview, Strekowska admitting knowing she hit the car and sped off as she panicked.
It was heard that the defendant lived with her sister and her three children after being laid off last year.
Defence solicitor Gabriel Ingram stated: “She had been reversing and simply did not see the car behind her”.
District Judge Bernie Kelly said: “Please, she was reversing by touch, how could she not see what is behind her,
“She has three mirrors and a head with eyes that swivels”.
The judge commented that Strekowska was “living up to the standard female driver jokes”.
Judge Kelly added that the defendant had been particularly “mean and nasty” as when approached by police she said that she had a friend who could fix the damage.
Mr Ingram stated: “She did return some time later with her friend as she felt her English was not strong enough to speak to the owner of the injured party’s car”.
Strekowska was handed five penalty points and ordered to pay a fine of £275, along with the offender’s levy of £15, within 10 weeks.
