Supporters of the campaign to retain Post Office services in Armagh City Shopping Centre including customers and business owners, gathered on Saturday 19th April to unveil a banner and urge support for a petition on the issue.
Councillors Garath Keating and Gerard Paul White also participated in the demonstration and afterwards they reiterated their calls for the Post Office to remain in its current location.
Councillor Keating said: “The fact is there is no rationale for moving the Post Office from this location. Should these services move there are 15 businesses in Shopping Centre which would be under threat. In real terms this equates to 200 staff whose jobs could be at risk.
“The owners of Armagh Shopping Centre have invested considerably in restoring a once derelict building in Armagh city centre into a thriving shopping centre. The location of the Post Office branch was and is a key element to the Shopping Centre’s ongoing viability.
Councillor White added: “There is no benefit to the public in moving the Post Office branch. The new proposed location is less favourable for parking and would be less accessible for those with disabilities. Customer satisfaction with current facility is excellent and there is no logical reason for this move.”
The proposal to move the Post Office branch is currently in public consultation and members of the public are invited to sign a petition, in Armagh City Shopping Centre, to retain the service.
