For most of us, the chaos and disruption caused by last night’s storm had largely blown over by the morning – for the residents of one Co. Armagh street, that was only the start of it.
Against the backdrop of the inclement weather, a number of homes were evacuated in the Woodlawn Heights area of Richhill late on Sunday night following the discovery of a suspected World War II bomb.
The historic munition was found to the rear of a property in the area.
When Armagh I attended the scene shortly after 9am this morning, we found a number of police vehicles, including two bomb disposal trucks.
While we were able to gain access to Woodlawn Heights, a police car was positioned further up the street blocking access to the remainder of the area.
It was a calm and quiet scene, with only a very small number of residents out to watch as less than a dozen police officers were at work.
The only advice one resident gave to us was to “stay well back”.
While activity on the street was limited, it was undoubtedly the last thing that residents wished to worry about after most were stuck indoors last night.
For some residents of Woodlawn Heights, they couldn’t do even that.
Inspector Browne said: “Police are working to assess the object at this time. I appreciate this may cause some disruption, however keeping people safe is paramount and we will not take any risks. I want to thank those who may be affected for their patience as we continue our work to clear the area.”
