Seagahan Dam added to public angling estate

Seagahan Dam has been added to the public angling estate, it has been confirmed today (Thursday).

The Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure, working in partnership with NI Water, secured the addition.

And it will take effect from this Sunday, March 1, the start of the game angling season.

Seagahan, just several miles from the city, fishes well for both rainbow trout and brown trout.

“This provides an additional angling water to DCAL permit holders,” said DCAL Minister Caral Ni Chuilin.

“I am also pleased to announce that Portavoe reservoir, near Donaghadee, has reopened for angling after major maintenance work being carried out by NI Water.

“My Department has stocked the water with 2,500 rainbow trout over the winter.

“Fishing is one of our most popular leisure activities, it is enjoyed across the north by thousands of people all year round.

£As well as being fun, angling has numerous social and health benefits, and can have a positive impact on emotional well-being. It is an activity open to everyone, regardless of age or ability.

“DCAL staff work year-round to monitor, nurture and conserve fish stocks, they also populate waterways with fish and clamp down on all forms of illegal angling. These ongoing efforts, in collaboration with a range of other agencies and stakeholders, help to safeguard angling.

“Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish anglers using Seagahan, Portavoe and all our waters tight lines in 2015.”
