A new much-needed toilet block will be built at a popular fishing spot in south Armagh.
Newry, Mourne and Down Council have agreed to spend £20,000 installing the facility at Kiltybane Lake, near Cullyhanna.
“This is great news for local people, particularly the local fishing club who have maintained the current toilet facilities,” said SDLP councillor Peter Byrne, as he welcomed the decision by the Active and Healthy Communities Committee.
He added: “Unfortunately, the unit is now in a poor condition and in need of replacement.
“It is right for the Council to recognise the importance of Kiltybane Lake with this much needed investment.
“The Council has already committed to update the toilets at the Lough Ross Amenity site outside Crossmaglen by the end of the next financial year.
“We must continue to invest in Amenity sites in the south Armagh to entice visitors back to the area.”
The well-known lake, which is managed by Fane Fishing Club is not only a popular fishing spot, but is an amenity area which hosts a picnic area and car parking facilities.
The site is also frequently used by outdoor yoga groups.
Sinn Fein councillor Barra Ó Muirí had recently reported that the toilet block was in an unsafe condition.
Along with party colleague Terry Hearty, he had met with the Fishing Club to discuss funding opportunities.
At a follow up meeting with councillor Hearty, the Fishing Club and Council officials, a recommendation was made to seek funding through the Active and Healthy Communities Committee.
The Committee agreed that there was a need for investment in Kiltybane.
The Sinn Féin elected representative wished Fane Fishing Club all the best in the future.
