Newry Street in Newtown to finally return to two-way system

Newry Street Newtownhamilton

Newry Street in Newtownhamilton is being reconfigured to allow for two-way traffic later this month, it can be revealed.

For years, the street had been closed off before becoming a one-way system. That is all set to change later this month.

The two-way system will lead to better movement of traffic through the town and will help to ease congestion issues.

These improvements are part of phased work involving Newtownhamilton Police Station in continuing consultation with the Department for Infrastructure.

Outlining the background, District Commander Superintendent Norman Haslett said: “Newry Street being returned to two-way traffic is the first stage of planned works as outlined within the South Armagh Policing Review.

“This is a positive development for the community as it will mean improved traffic flow through the town.

“At a number of public meetings within south Armagh last year, we gave an assurance that we will continue to provide updates on progress on the policing review when they become available.

“I can now confirm that this first phase for Newry Street will get underway in March followed by a planning application being lodged for the station itself. This second phase proposes to upgrade and modernise the appearance of the existing perimeter fence, however, to date there is no timescale as to when this work will be undertaken.

:This strategy will seek to provide a modern fit-for-purpose police estate for the future and we thank the public in advance of any disruption while these roadworks are ongoing.”
