A Newtownhamilton dog-walker has been left shaken following a dog attack that resulted in injury to herself and her two small dogs.
The walker – who has asked to remain anonymous – said she was walking her dogs at 6pm on Sunday evening along the Armagh Road area of the town when a large dog jumped a fence followed by a second medium-sized dog.
In what she deemed to be an “unprovoked attack” she explained that the dogs then immediately took hold of her two – with injury resulting to both – but one in particular she said has been “ripped to pieces under her stomach and neck”.
Describing the attack as “ferocious” the dog-walker did everything she could to try and separate the animals.
Speaking to Armagh I she described how she also sustained injury: “I was kicking at the dogs trying to get them off.
“Then one jumped up and broke the skin on my side. I also have a bite mark on my finger.”
The owners of the aggressing dogs, she said did attempt to intervene, adding: “The owner came out and was kicking at the dog too, but to no avail.”
Once they managed to separate the animals the woman rushed her injured dogs straight to the vet where the more seriously injured pet was administered a pain-killing injection and anti-inflammatory and issued with an appointment on Monday morning for stitching of her wounds.
The concerned pet-owner has been left incredibly shaken by the attack.
“I’m devastated,” she said. “Just looking at the wee animal in pain and shaking has been awful. She got no sleep all night.
“Please be very careful when walking your dogs in Newtownhamilton,” she added.
“I just think people should have proper control of their dogs so things like this don’t happen again”.
Armagh I have contacted the Dog Warden at Newry, Mourne and Down District Council for comment.
