Post mortem to be carried out on dog which was wrapped in Christmas ribbon and dumped in lake

Camlough Lake

A post mortem is to be carried out on a dog which was recovered from Camlough Lake.

The discovery on Sunday caused shock and outrage after it was revealed the dog had been tied up in red ribbon, placed in a plant pot, before being covered in a plastic bag and thrown into the lake.

The remains were discovered by an off-duty dog warden out fishing.

Originally reported as being a small Maltese terrier, it has now been identified as an elderly male Bichon type dog.

It was not microchipped.

A spokesperson for Newry, Mourne and Down District Council confirmed that an investigation by its animal welfare team “remains ongoing”.

A spokesperson said on Tuesday afternoon: “A post-mortem has been requested.

“The animal welfare team is liaising with the PSNI and welcome any further information that would help with their enquiries.

“Please contact the PSNI or the Council’s Animal Welfare department on 028 3751 5800.”
