New stylish residential complex for ‘active elderly’ earmarked for Co Down seaside town

Sixteen apartments, car parking and landscaping feature in proposals within short distance of Newcastle promenade

Newcastle, Co Down

A new stylish residential complex geared towards the ‘active elderly’ is being planned for a Co Down seaside resort.

The development – consisting of a total of 16 apartments – has been earmarked for a site close to the town centre in Newcastle.

An application for the scheme has been submitted to Newry, Mourne and Down District Council for consideration.

It has been lodged by Ganson UK, based in nearby Castlewellan.

The housing scheme – in an ‘L’ shaped construction – would be located off a private road at Donard Park.

In addition to the apartments, the scheme would see the inclusion of 24 parking spaces and an additional disabled parking bay.

And there would be communal open space too.

It would stretch up to three storeys and the ground floor apartments would each have private patio areas.

Landscaping and planting, including low shrubs, is included.

According to a supporting statement accompanying the application, the development is designed to provide “alternative living accommodation for the active elderly”, with the target age range 55 and over.

The statement says the earmarked site is in a fine location.

It adds: “The site is within walking to distance to Donard Park which offers an attractive area of high quality communal space. The promenade along the sea front is also a short walking distance accessed via Donard Park.”

The application will be publicly advertised this week for feedback.

Planners are then expected to make a decision later in the year.
