Southern Health Trust congratulates new doctor of pharmacy

The Southern Health and Social Care Trust has congratulated Dr Roisin O’Hare on completing her Doctorate – DPharm. Roisin is based at Craigavon Area Hospital’s pharmacy and is the Lead Teacher Practitioner Pharmacist for Northern Ireland.

The Southern Trust has around 150 pharmacy staff, providing services 24 hours a day across five hospital sites and support to community services.

Along with purchasing and supplying medicines and dressings, the team is responsible for an increasing number of specialist drugs, for example on a monthly basis preparing 700 cytotoxic infusions to treat malignant diseases like cancer and 680 anticoagulant outpatient clinic appointments, to help patients manage their medicines that prevent blood clots and certain types of heart attacks or stroke.

Responsible for the clinical learning of pharmacy students from both Queens and the University of Ulster, Dr O’Hare splits her time between the universities and hospitals, teaching and supporting trainee pharmacists.

With a background in cardiology, Roisin is also involved in research and development. Her   Doctorate specialised in pharmacy education and her research project was on the   introduction of Objective Structured Clinical Examinations into a School of Pharmacy.

Commending Dr O’Hare on her recent achievement, Director of Pharmacy for the Southern Trust, Dr Tracey Boyce said: “Each month, around 43,000 items are dispensed   from our pharmacies at Craigavon and Daisy Hill hospitals and the team are involved in approximately 840 medication related decisions, so pharmacy staff have a key role to play in the delivery of safe high quality care across the Southern Trust.

“In order to keep abreast with constant developments in modern medicine, it is vital that our pharmacists are highly skilled – so we are delighted to have the leadership of Roisin in ensuring that staff are educated to the highest standards and can use this expertise to ensure the best possible outcome for their patients.”
