SRC Armagh students premiere unique work in aid of charity

A premiere performance of a unique piece of music by the students of Armagh’s Southern Regional College has exceeded all expectations – and raised a fantastic sum for charity.

‘Heartworks’ was performed for the first time on Wednesday night, as the very talented students of the SRC Music Department lit up the Market Place Theatre in Armagh at a musical showcase, in which they performed a variety of musical styles.

They also succeeded in raising a brilliant £700 for CRY – Ireland (Cardiac Risk in the Young).

With an audience of parents, students and special guests the evening was such a success.

The concert is a culmination of the students’ studies; they stage the whole event from technical support and performance right through to promotion.

This year they were delighted to welcome the Lord Mayor, Darryn Causby, Deputy Lord Mayor Catherine Seeley, and Anne and Tommy Fegan, whose support means so much to the college and to the students.

“Such unreal talent. Future stars and thanks for the invite,” Deputy Lord Mayor Catherine Seeley said.

“Absolutely brilliant talent,” added Councillor Brendan Curran.

Along with various individual and group performances, this year the talented music students performed a unique piece entitled ‘Heartworks’, which was written, composed, recorded and performed live by them and their delivery on the night was seamless.

They presented a composition of six genres with the theme Heartworks, based on artist Marc Chagall, a Russian-born French painter and graphic artist. His work was characterised by the use of rich emotive colour and dream imagery, and had a significant influence on surrealism.

The students wrote around the paintings their issues and composed the finished work Heartworks.

As part of their studies, a CD of the performance was pre-recorded and sold on the night for £5 for the chosen charity.

First Year student David Purvis presented the acts and steered the audience through the evening with his own style of humour and banter.

Paddy Craig, Music Course Co-ordinator, presented a selection of the year’s achievements and really highlighted the amount of diversity of talent within the department.
