Student Rachel for USA to fulfil Capitol Hill dream!

KEADY student Rachel Powell has been handpicked as one of 30 students to represent Ireland and Northern Ireland in the USA this summer.

Rachel will intern for Rep. Dan Kildee on Capitol Hill as part of the Washington-Ireland Program (WIP).

Getting onto WIP was highly competitive, with over 500 students from across Northern Ireland, the Republic and Great Britain competing for a few coveted places.

Rachel, who was a student at St Patrick’s High School Keady before studying Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Queen’s University Belfast, is looking forward to her once in a lifetime trip to America:

She told Armagh I: “I’m incredibly excited to have been awarded this honour and I can’t wait to intern in the USA.

“I hope I can make my friends and family at home proud. I aim to bring back some valuable skills that I learn there to help improve cross-community and cross-border relationships here in my home community.”

Hillary Clinton is a supporter of the Washington – Ireland Program and its students.

She commented: “Many of WIP’s alumni are now emerging as a new generation of leaders committed to peace, stability and prosperity in both Northern Ireland and the Republic.”

The Washington Ireland Program is a cross-community charity which offers young leaders from across the island  the opportunity to live and work in Washington D.C, while completing leadership training and public service projects.

If you would like to track Rachel’s progress this summer, you’ll be able to follow her blog and view photos from this year’s Class at the programme’s website: www.wiprogram.org.

We at Armagh I wish her well in her endeavours!
