An Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough councillor has praised the work of emergency services after a fire almost “destroyed” his family’s farm.
Cllr Tim McClelland for the DUP wished to pass on his thanks to the Northern Ireland Fire Service on behalf of the entire McClelland family after a blaze took hold of oat field on their farm on August 12.
The past Deputy Lord Mayor, owns and manages an award-winning arable farm near Tandragee, County Armagh.
Formally a Member of Ulster Farmers Union Board, Tim also chaired the Union’s Arable Policy Committee and remains heavily involved in agricultural and environmental matters.
Explaining the source of the ignition, the councillor said: “A spark caused a field of oat straw to catch fire. Literally within 30 minutes nearly 10 acres of straw was destroyed.
“Three fire appliances were in attendance. Best of thanks to all fire crew for getting the situation under control.
“Thanks also to Megaw Harvesting for all their help!”
Thankfully, the councillor was also able to announce there were no injuries and no buildings were damaged.
“It did come a little close for comfort,” he said. “Very fortunate and very thankful.”
He has also expressed a sincere thanks to everyone who has reached out and sent messages of support since the incident.
