The Education Minister Paul Givan unveiled a plaque to the late Andy Nicholl on a visit to Scarva Primary School yesterday (Wednesday).
During the visit, the Minister toured the school and listened to the choir.
He also met Principal Heather Lindsay, Board of Governors, staff, pupils and local MLA Diane Forsythe.
Mr Givan unveiled the memorial plaque to Andy Nicholl, a former pupil and much respected member of the school community and parents support group, who sadly passed away in May of last year.
The Minister met Susan Nicholl, Andy’s wife, and members of the Parents and Friends Association.
He said: “It was a pleasure to unveil a plaque in memory of Andy Nicholl at Scarva Primary School. I was particularly honoured to have the opportunity to meet some of Andy’s family and friends, and to hear about the legacy he has left at the school.
“I know that Andy was a very proud former pupil at Scarva Primary School and a much respected member of the entire school community and the parent support group.”
The Minister continued: “In November 2023 the Scarva Primary School Parents & Friends Association organised a tractor run in Andy’s memory and raised a significant sum of money, which was used to buy resources for the school and to donate to local charities.
“That is something to be truly commended and celebrated. I have no doubt that he would be extremely proud of the success of that day.”
Andy was a lorry driver, with family links to the rally scene, so it was decided that the Andy Nicholl Memorial Truck & Tractor Run would be held on Saturday, November 25, with funds to be shared equally between the Cancer Fund for Children and Scarva Primary School.
Andy had been diagnosed with cancer in the spring of 2022 and began a hard battle against the disease, initially making strong progress. However, the cancer took hold and Andy sadly lost his battle on May 28.
Andy’s widow Susan chose the Cancer Fund for Children as one of the recipients due to the care the family received in the days after Andy died.
