Elderly man dies and wife seriously injured after Tandragee road crash horror

"I have known the persons involved all my life and I am totally shocked and deeply saddened to learn of this local tragedy."

An elderly man has died and his wife is in a serious condition after a crash near Tandragee.

Emergency services, including the Northern Ireland Air Ambulance, were tasked to the scene this afternoon (Tuesday).

The Cornascriebe Road, between Tandragee and Hamiltonsbawn, was closed in both directions as a result, with motorists advised to avoid the area.

The collision involved two vehicles and it is understood the man who died was the driver of one of them.

Local Alderman Paul Berry knew the man who died and spoke of his shock.

He said: “It is with real shock that I have learned of the death of one person and serious injury of another on the outskirts of Tandragee today.

“I have known the persons involved all my life and I am totally shocked and deeply saddened to learn of this local tragedy.

“The loss of a life is devastating for the family and given my knowledge of the person who has passed away it will be a massive blow to the community and organisations involved in for many years.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family, to others involved in the accident at this tragic time.”

Alderman Gareth Wilson, who lives close to the scene, said: “This is such a shocking accident and I send my thoughts, sympathy and prayers to the local family who have lost a very cherished family member.

“I witnessed the air ambulance and emergency services racing to the scene close to my home and one always fears when such activity is on going that it must be a serious incident.

“That has very sadly been the case and the man who has tragically died was a very well respected individual who will be very sorely missed by his family and the local community.

“I send my well wishes to his wife who is currently receiving treatment.”
