A row of buildings – including a former pub – could be demolished to make way for a major extension to a Tandragee supermarket as part of a £26 million investment by the Henderson Group.
Armagh I can reveal the family-owned company is applying for permission for the redevelopment which would change the face of Mill Street in the town.
The Spar shop there has grown significantly over recent years and just last year saw the introduction of the Post Office in store.
The store is based at number 20-24 Mill Street, Tandragee, with parking to the side.
Now permission is being sought to demolish numbers 2 to 14 Mill Street.
The overall plans would allow for the construction of a new retail unit – measuring over 112 sq metres – and associated parking, and facilitate alterations and extension to the existing Spar shop.
The project would involve the demolition of the former Paddock Bar, as well as a charity shop and house.
Plans had been previously been approved four years ago for a ‘back of house’ extension to allow for food prep area and chillers and freezers.
This application for the demolition and extension has now been submitted to Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council for consideration.
It is due to be publicly advertised this week with a decision expected in due course.
The Tandragee proposal is one of three redevelopment plans by the Mallusk-based company, as part of a total investment of £26 million.
The other supermarkets which will be transformed are in County Antrim, at Ballymena and Doagh.
Over the past year, the Henderson Group says it has opened 19 stores in Northern Ireland and plans for a similar number over the next 12 months. Work will include new-build developments and upgraded facilities, both approved and in the pipeline.
