The owners of a popular canal-side cafe – famous for its homemade cakes – are close up shop for the final time next month.
The current owners of the Scarva Tea Rooms – situated on the banks of the canal in the small Co Down village – announced the news on their Facebook page.
The couple have cited retirement as their reason following the end of their franchise contract with the Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council.
Their statement read: “We regret to inform all our wonderful loyal customers that Scarva Tea Rooms will close for business on Sunday 30th September 2018.
“Our franchise contract ends on that date and we have decided to retire.
“We would like to thank you all for your support over the last seven years especially our daily regulars (you know who you are) this decision is bittersweet.
“We will no longer be issuing loyalty cards and will cease to stamp existing cards on the 31st August. Any partially filled cards will be redeemed as full throughout the month of September. Best wishes to all, Barbara & Colin.”
The news has been greeted with shock by many loyal customers.
One commented: “So sorry to hear about you closing. My family have used your cafe since you opened. Happy retirement.”
Another added: “Best coffee stop in the country. Hope it hasn’t been been bought over by a faceless company.”
While many others wish the popular pair the very best in a well-deserved retirement.
It is understood the Tea Rooms will be closed over the winter months for building works before it is re-advertised for a new franchisee.
