Two hooded men armed with screwdriver disturbed by staff at Tandragee shop

Two hooded men were disturbed as they attempted to burgle a shop in Tandragee last night (Tuesday).

One of the men was armed with a screwdriver as they made their way into the Spar shop on Church Street around 8.30pm.

Detective Sergeant Stephen Wilson, speaking to Armagh I this afternoon said: “Staff members reported disturbing two masked males in the staff only area of a shop at around 8.30pm on Tuesday evening.

“The first male was wearing a navy hooded top, blue jeans, dark coloured trainers, yellow and green gloves and was carrying a screwdriver.

“The second male wore a dark top, blue jeans, dark trainers, a black peaked cap, red gloves and had a dark coloured scarf over his face.

“Both males left the scene on foot after being discovered and at this stage it is not known if anything was taken.”

He added: “I would ask anyone who noticed any suspicious activity in the Church Street area of the town or anyone with any information which could assist us with our enquiries to contact detectives in Lurgan on 101 quoting reference number 1218 04/12/18.

“Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime.”

Commenting on the incident after further discussions with local Police teams DUP Alderman Wilson, who attended the scene last night, stated: “I understand this is being treated as a burglary by the PSNI however nothing was stolen in the incident.

“It is believed two youths gained access through a window at the rear of the shop and when staff heard noises and were alerted to the burglary upstairs, the individuals, on being discovered, ran off on foot.”

He concluded: “I would appeal again for anyone who may have witnessed anything suspicious to contact the Police on 101 and assist with their ongoing investigations.”
