An online petition has been started to show the Southern Health and Social Services Trust the real depth of feeling within the community over plans to permanently axe Armagh’s minor injuries unit.
The facility, at Tower Hill, is currently subject to another period of public consultation which would see it close permanently and patients requiring to travel to South Tyrone Hospital in Dungannon or Craigavon Area Hospital.
The facility closed last November and should have reopened at the end of March.
But it never did and now the plans are to keep it closed – permanently!
The Orchard Branch of trade union Unison has set up an online petition, which will be forwarded to the Southern Trust’s Director of Acute Services.
And it has already gathered more than 380 signatures or the 500 the Orchard Branch has set as a target.
In the petition they urge people to sign and show their support, saying: “The closure of the minor injuries unit would leave the city and district of Armagh with no access to urgent medical treatment aside from the GP service.
“This would have a detrimental effect on local health care and place additional strain on the already stretched health services of neighbouring districts.”
The public consultation comes to a close on September 11.
