Weather warnings issued: Snow to be followed by severe gales this week

The first real signs of winter are expected to hit over the coming days, with snow to be followed by gale force winds.

The Met Office has updated two ‘yellow’ weather warnings and the public are being advised to be prepared and exercise caution.

Heavy rains are expected over Co Armagh and across the Province tonight (Saturday).

And falling temperatures from tomorrow is forecast to bring snow.

The first of the weather warnings comes into effect from 2pm tomorrow (Sunday) and runs right through until noon on Monday.

According to the Met Office, showers will fall increasingly as snow, particularly on higher grounds, with a mixture of rain, hail, sleet and snow to lower levels.

Forecasters say accumulating snow may lead to travel disruption on routes over high ground, whilst icy stretches are also likely to form on untreated surfaces.

The Met Offices advises: “The public should be aware of the potential for disruption to travel during Sunday night and Monday morning.”

A second weather warning has been issued going into Wednesday morning, December 10, when it is forecast that “severe gales” may affect much of the Province.

There is the potential for “significant disruption” and frequent wintry showers could provide a further hazard.

The warning remains in place until 11.45pm on Wednesday night and further updates will be provided by the Met Office during the course of the week.
