Newry & Armagh DUP Assemblyman William Irwin MLA has been unanimously selected by the Party to fight next year’s Westminster election.
Commenting following the selection process Mr Irwin said he was delighted to once again contest the Westminster poll and looked forward to getting on the door steps.
He stated: “Newry & Armagh currently has an MP that ‘takes the pay’ but ‘stays away’ and that means the people of Newry & Armagh, regardless of their political persuasion, are not served in the House of Commons by the current abstentionist Connor Murphy. That needs to change.
“I am grateful to my local Association for selecting me for this election battle and I am relishing the opportunity to step forward and give the electorate of Newry & Armagh the chance to vote for a candidate that will give everything to the role and put constituents first.”
He concluded: “The DUP are fielding a very strong team of candidates across the Province and given our track record of representation in Westminster and the real prospect of a hung parliament, the DUP would be in a strategically important position in regards to negotiating directly with the British Government.
“In standing for this upcoming election, I am giving the people of Newry & Armagh the opportunity to vote for a candidate who has a proven track record of getting the work done and standing up for Northern Ireland. I stand solidly on the Union and I am committed to ensuring Northern Ireland continues to grow as an important part of the United Kingdom.”
