The Police Ombudsman has appealed for witnesses to a road traffic collision last week on the M1, which led to the death of an Armagh pensioner.
Eighty-four-year-old Phillip Smythe died later from injuries sustained in the accident, which happened on the M1 in the early hours of Monday, September 21.
The Police Ombudsman’s Office has appealed for anyone who saw the collision, involving Mr Smythe’s VW Polo, and a police vehicle, to come forward.
It happened near Junction 10 of the M1 at around 5am.
The pensioner had sustained critical injuries after colliding with the police vehicle while driving down the M1 in the wrong direction.
He passed away last Wednesday night in hospital.
Mr Smythe had been predeceased by his wife in June.
A male police officer was also injured in the accident and taken to hospital.
A spokesperson for the Police Ombudsman’s Office said: “Anyone who saw the accident or the events leading up to it is asked to call the Police Ombudsman’s Witness Appeal Line on 02890 828777.”
