Armagh man claims bronze at World U23 rowing championships

CORK native Paul O’Donovan (pictured) claimed bronze for Ireland at the World U-23 Rowing Championships in Austria.

The 19-year-old UCD student started the lightweight single sculls final well and stayed in the top three throughout, finishing behind American Andrew Campbell Jr and Franciscus Goutier of Holland.

Denise Walsh finished sixth in the women’s lightweight single sculls final.

Irish doubles pairing Killian Carroll (Cork) and Conall McCavitt (Armagh) have come up agonisingly short in their final group game at the World Games in Cali, Colombia.

Team Ireland comfortably saw off France and the UK to set up a winner-takes-all final group clash against tournament favourites USA, who were represented by world champions Timbo Gonzales and Tywan Cook. After a spirited showing, the Irish pair were beaten15-9 15-13.
