Preparations are well underway for a full Marathon in Armagh this summer – and a very worthy charity will be boosted by the event.
The Armagh Marathon is due to take place on the August Bank Holiday weekend and there will be three options available.
Participants will be able to compete as individuals or part of a relay team of four runners when the Marathon takes place on Sunday, August 28.
For those who think they are up to the challenge, there is also the option of Back2Back Marathons. Those deciding this is for them will complete the first Marathon the previous day, Saturday, August 27.
The event is being organised by Race Director Matthew Nicholson, who is also the man behind the hugely popular Run Armagh 10K event.
The Run Armagh 10K began in 2009 and raised money for CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) and has now become a permanent fixture in the local racing calendar.
Those taking part in the Armagh Marathon this August will be able to raise money for their own charities or none, but additional sponsorship would be appreciated to CRY.
Participants who complete the Armagh Marathon – the full 26.2 miles – will receive special commemorative medals upon crossing the finishing line.
The event will consist of four full laps of the Armagh 10K course, with the finish line on the Mall.
It will get underway at 8am and be headquartered from the Royal School Armagh on College Hill.
Last year Matthew conducted a poll to gauge interest in the concept of an Armagh Marathon and the study, via SurveyMonkey.com, showed 98% of respondents believed Armagh should host such an event.
The Armagh City Marathon is a fantastic addition to the local athletics calendar and again charity will also be the winner on the day!
Says Matthew: “Armagh has a rich heritage in sport and we are very excited to bring a full Marathon to the city.”
The cost to compete is £25 for the individual Marathon, £45 for the Back2Back Marathons and £60 for the relay (maximum of four runners).
Registration will be open up until the evening before the race and it may also be possible to register on the day – depending on the numbers of course.
