Preview: Armagh International Road Race

THE MALL provides the setting for the 23rd annual Armagh International Road Race tomorrow night and a number of big names are set to feature.

Double Paralympic gold medallist Michael McKillop will line up in the Men’s 5K race alongside Armagh AC’s Shane Kerr, Brendan Gregg (USA), and James Walsh (Leeds City AC) in a field that promises to be very competitive.

Samuel Alexander (USA), Luke Cragg (Runners Life/Leeds City AC), Mark Keneally (Clonliffe Harriers AC/Brooks) and Paul Pollock (Annadale Striders) could also find themselves setting the pace.

Double Olympian and World Championship silver medallist Lisa Dobriskey (Loughborough Uni) will battle Northern Ireland’s leading female middle distance runner Kerry Harty (Newcastle AC) and a number of other top names in the Women’s 3K race.

Both Dobriskey and former IAAF Antrim International XC Champion Mary Cullen (North Sligo AC) hold personal bests quicker than the course record of 9:15 so the crowd might witness this record tumble at The Mall.

Danielle Fegan (Armagh AC) provides the local interest in this race and will be hoping home advantage could give her an edge in what promises to be a tightly-fought battle.

Men’s 3km course record holder Ciaran Doherty (Letterkenny AC) will be hoping to better the 8:43.15 he set last year while Stewart Orr (Cambuslang Harriers) and North Down AC pair Niall Robinson and Michael Dyer will also fancy their chances of a fast time.

The action, sponsored by Brooks Running, begins at 6.30pm with a number of Juvenile races taking place before the headline events get under way at 8.05pm.
