Magheralin swimmer Daniel Wiffen is an Olympic Champion!
Wiffen, who is also a world champion, claimed an Olympic record as he swam to glory in the Men’s 800 Freestyle final on Tuesday night.
The former St Patrick’s Grammar School student became Ireland’s first male medallist in the pool and third overall after Michelle Smyth and Mona McSharry, who only made it onto the list on Monday with bronze in the women’s 100m breaststroke.
Wiffen trailed Italy’s Gregorio Paltrineri with 50m left but soared into the lead, holding off a late surge from Bobby Finke of the United States to take top spot by 0.56 seconds.
It’s a remarkable achievement for a young man who promises so much more at these Games in Paris.
