Armagh ease through in All-Ireland qualifiers with seven-point win over Sligo

Sligo 1-12 Armagh 1-19

Armagh booked their place in the third round of the All-Ireland qualifiers with a seven point victory over Sligo in Markiewicz Park on Saturday evening.

Kieran McGeeney’s men took a slender single point advantage into the break having knocked over three unanswered points in the final few minutes of the half.

It was a tight affair in the opening 35 minutes but a quick-fire goal from captain Rory Grugan put daylight between the sides within a minute of the throw-in.

It was tit-for-tat after that but as the hosts tired, Armagh rammed home their advantage with Niall Grimley – back from suspension – in inspired kicking form.

A lack of discipline saw Sligo lose two of their most experienced players in Adrian Marron and Charlie Harrison late on.

A consolation goal in the dying seconds of the game reduced the deficit to seven but it was far too little, too late for the Connaught men.

Armagh will be in Monday’s draw where they will drawn against much sterner opposition.

In that draw will be Ulster rivals Tyrone, Monaghan and Cavan, as well as Mayo.
