UNDER 12 FOOTBALL
The Under 12’s lost out to Madden in a challenge game on Friday night. Lorcan O’ Malley, Dean Conlon, Sean McVerry, and Dara Swift put in good solid defensive performances at the back. Nathan Valleley, Thomas O’Malley and Rory Foster worked tirelessly and impressively in midfield, and Patrick McVerry,Jason Devlin and Joe McClelland played well in the forward line. St Michael’s started off slowly but played particularly well in the second half, taking some nice scores. Man of the Match went to Joe McClelland
UNDER 16 FOOTBALL
Our U16 footballers began their league campaign away to Middletown this week. Under our new amalgamation, the boys will be glad to have got a first competitive game together and their campaign started. The team took a while to get going and let the opposition gain a first half lead. They made huge improvements in the second period, showing a more determined spirit and improved passages of play. However on the final whistle they were defeated by 3 points on a score line of 1-19 to 4-7. While everyone played their part, special mention goes to James mc Verry who had a great game in midfield. An encouraging start by the team.
Senior Team
The seniors travelled to Lissumon for the opening league fixture of the season on Sunday. In decent conditions the opening 10 minutes of the first half was a cagey affair with plenty of handling errors by both teams, as they looked to settle into this derby match. Newtown were quickest to get to grips with the game though with Brendan Davidson (2) Kevin Murray and Neil ORourke all pointing to keep Newtown ahead, and their lead was strengthened when a great move starting in the half back line, released Darren Mullen in front of goal.
Darren had a defender on his heels and the keeper came out to narrow the angle, but he still managed to take his opportunity to push Newtown into a comfortable 5 point lead with 5 mins remaining in the half. Lissumon probed for a response but good tackling by Francie Hughes and Kevin Obrien kept the Newtown boys in front by 5 points at the break.
Newtown started the second half where they left off and Shane Rock scored a long range free won by K Carragher to keep us ahead. But Lissumon battled back well and had a dominant spell where they scored 3 points to stay in touch. Newtown tagged on two more scores from play, with a great effort from Kevin Murray on the run, and another long range effort from S Rock. Then from a seemingly comfortable position Newtown conceded a very soft goal to set up a nervy last 5 mins. When Neil ORourke was black carded again, it was looking ominous but to their credit, Newtown went up the field and tagged on another point, hanging on to finish the game ahead by two points on a scoreline of 1-12 to 1-10. This was a great start to the league from St.Michaels, it was a good team performance with good discipline shown from every sector of the field. There were impressive performances on the day from KB O’Brien S.Rock and K Murray.

The start of the 2015 season had a similar feel to that of 2014 with a local derby against Silverbridge Harps to open the year. The team made the short trip knowing that were was never going to be much in it either way, with very little margin for error. Our opponents made the quickest start and with ten minutes on the clock had already registered three points on the scoreboard.
Mullaghbawn got to grips with the game and landed two points to narrow the deficit to one point. A further exchange of scores towards the end of the half sent Silverbridge in with a six points to three lead at the break. There was notable increase in the intensity of play from our lads in the second half with every Mullaghbawn man that little bit sharper to the ball.
A sweeping move down the field resulted in a motivational long range score, before a free cut the difference to a single point once again. The boys in green kept the pressure up around the middle third and penned The Bridge in their own half, taking the lead in the process. A Silverbridge free, the only score our defence conceded in the second half levelled the game up moving in to the final ten minutes.
The never say die attitude demonstrated by Mullaghbawn saw them through in the final stages, with another free and a fine long range score coming off the back of a great team move. This was a great win to start of the new year and hopefully the seniors will continue to progress against Shane O’Neill’s next Sunday, April 19th @2pm in Camlough. Before that game, the reserves play Granemore on Wednesday evening.
CHARLIE GRANT CUP
The 2015 Charlie Grant Cup threw in at the weekend, with three of the quarter-finals taking place. On Saturday evening Mullaghbawn defeated O’Doirnin Blues in a goal fest, 5.05 V 3.05. Mullaghbawn’s opponents in the semi-final will be the winners of the deferred quarter-final between Killeavy & Cullyhanna, which will be held next Saturday, April 18th @2pm.
The other two quarter-finals, between Crossmaglen & Silverbridge and Dromintee & Carrickcruppen took place on Sunday evening and results were not available in time for this press release. The winners of Sunday’s two quarter finals will meet in the first semi-final, which will also take place next Saturday @2pm. Check twitter & facebook for details. UNDER 16 WINNING START
Our U16 team made a cracking start to the league with a 5.18 – 2.08 win at home to O’Doirnin Blues last Thursday.
LADIES FOOTBALL
The senior ladies made a great start to the league with a home win over Dorsey last week. On Saturday evening past, the ladies had another convincing win, this time away to Granemore. There are no games fixed until April 25th, however check with players or management for any potential re-fixtures or changes. Keep up the good start girls!

2015 Armagh Ladies Junior Football Championship Quarter Final Draw. Wednesday July 8th. St Paul’s v Mullaghbawn. Presumably in Lurgan, although not confirmed. If the girls are fortunate enough to progress the semi-final will be on Saturday August 1st.

NFL DIVISION III FINAL
Tickets are now on sale for the Allianz Division 3 Final on Saturday 25th April 2015. The game, the second of a double header, commences @7:15pm. Only the Hogan Stand will be open for this game and there is general admission, so seating is on a first come first serve basis i.e. there is no allocated seating on the ticket. Senior Men
Our senior men began their 2015 league campaign away to Clan na Gael on Sunday afternoon and recorded a hard fought but fully deserved two point win, 0 – 11 to 1 – 6. The Shanes played with the wind at their backs in the opening half and it was Oisin Murphy who was on target first to put his side ahead with the Clans replying soon after.
The sides then swapped points with Paul O’Rourke pointing a free for the Shanes but the Camlough side were guilty of not making the most of their chances in front of goal and it wasn’t until the final ten minutes of the half that they found their range, scoring three points in a row with Sean McLoughlin (1) and Paul O’Rourke (2) on target. This saw the Shanes lead by three at the break but in fairness it should have been a whole lot more.
Two early frees from the home side at the start of the second-half brought them back to within one before another O’Rourke free put the Shanes two in front again. However, the Clans fired over their third free of the half to leave just the minimum between them again before they pounced on a poor Shanes kick-out to find the back of the net to put them two ahead. A well taken point from Paul O’Rourke and a pointed free from Sean McLoughlin had the Shanes back on level terms before Micheál Brady popped the ball over to put his side back in front. Clan na Gael levelled again soon after but two late points from the boot of O’Rourke sealed the win for the Shanes and put their first two league points on the board.
Next up a home game next Sunday against Mullaghbawn.
Senior Ladies
Our senior ladies were scheduled to play Clann Eireann on Monday 13th April but the game has been postponed and may take place on Wednesday 22nd April but this is to be confirmed. Next Saturday, 18th April our senior ladies will take part in the Clann Eireann 7s tournament. Training continues on Tuesday and Friday evenings at 7.00pm in St Paul’s field.
Minor Boys
Our minor boys are scheduled to play O’Doirnin Blues on Monday night, 13th April in Culloville. All players are asked to meet at the club at 5.45pm

Training continues on Tuesday and Friday evenings at 7.00pm in St Paul’s field.
U16 Boys
Our U16 boys had their first league game last Thursday evening away to Dromintee and after a high scoring contest the Shanes lost out by six points, 5 – 16 to 6 – 7. After a closely fought first-half the Shanes trailed by three at the break and after ten minutes of the second period they had edged ahead by a single point. However, the home side gained control to lead by ten points with time running out but the Shanes kept battling right to the end but unfortunately came up just short. The lads return to action this Thursday evening with a home game against Tir na nÓg.
U16 Girls
Training continues on Tuesday and Friday evenings at 7.00pm in St Paul’s field.
U14 Girls
The U14 girls played in the Armagh Feile on Saturday in Clan Eireann. Whilst they didn’t qualify from their group, they did play some good football that will prepare them well for the upcoming Division 1 league campaign which begins on Monday 13th April with away game against Clan na Gael in Lurgan at 7.00pm. All girls are asked to meet at the club at 5.30pm. Training will continue every Wednesday from 6.30pm – 7.30pm.
U12½ Boys
Our U12½ boys travelled to Whitecross on Sunday morning for a challenge game. There was some excellent football on show from both sides and some fine individual performances. This was an excellent start to the season and gives us something to build on in the next few weeks as we begin the build up to the start of the league and the first tournaments of the year. The Shanes management would like to thank Whitecross for hosting the game and to thank the parents who assisted with lifts. The league begins at the end of the month and it is vitally important that all players at this age group attend the training sessions at club which take place on Tuesday and Friday evenings at 6.00pm and another challenge game is expected for next week-end.
U12 Girls
The U12s played their first league game away to Grange on Sunday evening but no result was available at time of going to press. Training continues every Wednesday from 6. 30pm – 7.30pm and all girls are asked to attend.
U10s
The U10s were in action on Sunday morning against Bosco in Newry. What started as a miserable morning thankfully cleared up in time for the game which was played in good conditions. There were a lot of absentees on the morning but the kids that turned up had a good run out with a number of good performances and a couple of excellent ones. Despite a slow start to the game, on what was the first run out of the season, the young Shanes settled down well in the second half and produced some lovely football. Training continues on Tuesday and Friday evenings at 6.00pm and it is hoped to have another game arranged for next weekend.
U8s
The U8s had their first games of the season on Thursday night against Bosco and Glenn in Newry and it was a very enjoyable evening’s football. There were plenty of good performances on the night with some excellent defending and score taking but plenty of areas for improvement were also spotted by management. Thanks to the Bosco club for the invite and organisation. All players are reminded that now the brighter evenings have arrived training continues every Tuesday and Friday night at the field at 6.00pm unless advised otherwise. Matches or training will generally be arranged for weekends but these will be advised of from week to week.
U6s
Training for our U6s resumes this Wednesday evening, 15th April after the Easter break in Bessbrook Community Centre at 6.00pm and all boys and girls at this age group are welcome to attend.
Monthly Executive Meeting
The next monthly executive committee meeting will take place in the club on Monday night, 13th April at 9.00pm and all committee members are asked to attend.
Armagh County Board Gaeltacht Scholarship Scheme 2015
The annual Feis CLG Ard Mhacha for Gaeltacht part-scholarships will be held on Tuesday 28th April at 7.00pm in the Ceannáras at the Athletic Grounds. Young people from clubs across the county will have an opportunity to win a part-scholarship to attend a Gaeltacht course during the summer and arrange for the completion of the application form.
Annual Country & Western Night
The club is hosting its annual Country and Western night over the May-Day bank holiday weekend on Saturday 2nd May. This is a fun night for all with a country karaoke competition, barbecue and several prizes on offer including best dressed cowboy and cowgirl. On the night we expect to see a number of cameo appearances by some local leading country music stars and everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy a great night’s craic.
Lotto
Last week’s winning lotto numbers were 13, 15, 20 & 26. There were no jackpot winners and 2 x match three winners. The jackpot now stands at £2600.
St Patrick’s Cullyhanna GFC
Armagh Senior League: St Patrick’s 4-10 Tir na nÓg 3-5
Cullyhanna eventually triumphed on Sunday afternoon in what was a topsy turvy opening game of their 2015 Senior league campaign. Playing on a sodden St Patrick’s Park pitch in bright Spring sunshine, Cullyhanna made the better start to the match with two Tony Donnelly points opening proceedings.
A Tir na nÓg point was then followed by an excellent Kieran Hoey goal for Cullyhanna. Two pointed frees brought the Portadown men back into contention but when a Tony Donnelly point was followed by a Gareth Mackin goal 23 minutes into the tie, Cullyhanna’s six point advantage looked like a commanding one.
However Tir na nÓg made significant inroads into the deficit before the break, pointing before a converted penalty. Cullyhanna did have an immediate chance to cancel out that major score but saw a penalty of their own stopped expertly by the Tir na nÓg goalkeeper to leave St Pat’s 2-3 to 1-4 ahead at the break.
The free scoring Tony Donnelly was quick to register an early second half point to give the home side a three point cushion. This lead was quickly eradicated however as Tir na nÓg briefly threatened an upset, pointing a free four minutes into the half before striking the net soon after to take the lead for the first, and as eventually proved, the only time in the game.
The concession of their lead turned out to be the stimulus for an improved Cullyhanna display as an Aidan Nugent equalising point 12 minutes into the half initiated a flurry of scores which ultimately proved decisive. A Kieran Hoey point from play preceded two Tony Donnelly pointed frees which put St Pat’s three in front.
When Tony Donnelly struck the net five minutes from time, victory seemed assured however plucky Tir na nÓg briefly cast a measure of doubt over the result with a goal of their own. Gary McCooey then completed a remarkable phase of play with a fourth Cullyhanna goal and the third major score in as many minutes. That goal finally put the game to bed and two late Aidan Nugent points from play added some gloss to the final result.
In truth, the eight point margin at the finish flattered a Cullyhanna side which, despite being the better team over the course of the hour, produced their best form only in patches. Indeed Tir na nÓg will no doubt look back ruefully on a couple of missed goal chances during the second half.
That said, it was most pleasing to secure two points in the opening league fixture and to continue our excellent home form from 2014. On the day, Tony Donnelly was excellent in attack and was ably assisted by Kieran Hoey and Aidan Nugent with Sean Og Irwin probably the pick of the defenders on his league debut.

St Pat’s Seconds got their league campaign off to a commendable start with a well deserved away victory over O’Hanlon’s. The Cullyhanna team looked comfortable throughout the hour and at times played some exciting football.
Defenders Paraic Brecknell, Francie McMullen and Sean Nugent all had solid performances, while Peter O’Neill had a tremendous game in midfield. Up front all six forwards contributed to the score sheet where the star of the show Aodhan Conlon was well assisted by Conor McCreesh, Kyle Reid and Patsy McKeever.

The steak knives are being sharpened, the aprons cleaned and the cookers heated up as we count down the final days before Cullyhanna’s culinary skills are put to the test this Saturday with our “Come Dine with Me” extravaganza. The Armagh Harps Community was greatly saddened by the death of our former Hall Of Fame Recipient Jim Ryan last week. Jim was a great club man who was involved in the Club for years and both sons were former players of Armagh Harps Barry and Colin. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time. Jim served his time for years on the Lotto Committee where he loved the criac and banter. A true Harps Gael who will be sadly missed.

Our Senior men got off to a great start securing their first victory of the season under the management team of John and Ryan in their first of four home games against Wolfe Tones 1.8 – 1.4. They wont meet Wolf Tones again now until the first round of the Senior Championship on Sat 9th May.

Twenty one teams applied for this League which will be split into a Mid/South Section and North Section. Harps will compete in the Mid/South Section with ten other opponents. First Round Harps are at home to Killeavy whom they meet on Wed 15th April at 8pm in Abbey Park.

The Girls had a great victory at the weekend winning the All County Feile Competition in Clan Eireann. A massive congratulations to all 22 players who travelled to Clan Eireann on Saturday and to the management team of Paddy McShane, Terry O’Connor and Shauna McVeigh. The girls where outstanding and showed some excellent football and with great passion. Well done girls. We wish Tiarna McVeigh a speedy recovery from her broken arm you will be back on your feet in no time.

First game up for the Harps girls was Clan na Gael,
From the throw in Harps girls were on top and by the break lead 1.2 to 0.1. Second half was much the same with Harps controlling every corner of the field and ran out comfortable winners. Of. 3.3 to 0.3 with all players getting a run out and doing everything that was asked of them,

Like the first game Harps girls from the throw in were in control of the final group game and by half time lead 2.3 to 0.0.
Second half was more of the same with Harps totalling over powering the Shane oNeills girls and again running out comfortable winners by 3.6 to 1.0 With again all players getting a run out in preparation for the semi final.
Semi final was now fixed for Harps v St Pats (Cullyhanna) whom came in to this game as second placed in there group by having missed out as group winners by a single point,
Again from the throw in the Harps girls were relentless with there fast sweeping first time football and by half time St Pats did not know what had hit them as Harps lead by 3.5 to 0.0 with game truely over . Again everyone played there part and notched up 1.3 between them to leave Harps very comfortable winners by 4 .8 to 1.0. The sad and unfortunate outcome to this game was the loss of our star player and centre half back Tiarna McVeigh whom on going in to do one of her trade mark blocks took a heavy kick to the wrist and ended up with a bad break in two places. This was a devastating blow for the Harps team as Tiarna was so instrumental in every game and left the management in a dilemma heading into the final. This was a massive game for these Young Harps girls as they now knew they were only one win away from winning the Armagh County Feile ,
Final game was against Clan na Gael whom had beaten the winners Clan Eirean from the other group in there semi final game, though we had already beat but this team we had no Tiarna and knew it would be a totally different game this time up!!
From the throw in clans came at us and with a strong breeze in there backs they bombarded our defence, With fullback Eimear oConnor standing solid and letting nothing through, Alana McCreesh now moved from midfield into Centrehalf back held a solid line and by half time Harps were 1.3 to 0.2 up at half time. With strong wind in our back for the second half Harps girls must have thought they were home and dry but this was not to be,
Clans came at the girls with some strong and relentless runs through the middle and really did test our midfield of Orla oKane, Geraldine Kiernan and Megan McShane whom was playing a third midfielder role with all three running themselves to a standstill.
Our full back line was marshalled by Eimear oConnor and let nothing by and with her wing backs of Aiveen Grew and Yvonne McCann holding tight Harps slowly got back in control of the game again.
The killer blow came in favour of the Harps girls with one minute remaining and Harps ahead by one point only it was to close to call but along ball in from centre half forward Micheala Dynes found Catherine Comiskey now playing at full forward turned and smashed in a goal that was to be the final score with Harps winning by 2.4 to 1.3 and to leave Armagh Harps girls Feile Champions.
A great performance from everyone especially new girl Sara McKenna whom at wing half back was outstanding throughout and with too many to mention this was a 22 panel performance from start to finish. Well done girls did us all proud.

Silverbridge Harps GFC
Senior: In a hard fought local derby at Keeley Park on Sunday, our senior men were thwarted by a strong challenge from near-neighbours Mullaghbawn.
Inside the first ten minutes we had built up a 4-point lead with points from D McCann, T. McKenna and two from Paddy Reel before Mullaghbawn registered their first score with a point from a free. With two further points – one each from Ciaran McGuire and Pauraic Keating – and a goal chance denied on the stroke of half time, we went in at the break 6-3 ahead.
Mullaghbawn came back strongly with the wind in the second half and inside five minutes the sides were level before our opponents took the lead for the first time in the 42nd minute. Substitute Brian Hearty leveled matters three minutes later but a strong finish by Mullaghbawn, led by an inspired Eddie English, saw them run out winners by 9 points to 7.
Ahead of the throw-in a minute’s silence was held in respect of Brian Murphy, Mullaghbawn who passed away early on Sunday. Brian had a close association with both clubs and was a former player with Silverbridge. Deepest sympathy is extended to his wife Marilyn, sons Paul, Mark and Paddy, daughter Sarah and family circle.
Second round is this Sunday 19th away to Culloville, throw-in 2pm.

The Minor league gets underway tonight (Monday) away to Cullyhanna, throw-in 6.45pm.
Under 16
Our U16s took on Pearse Ógs on Thursday last in their first game of the league. It was a tall order for a very young Bridge team, having being playing in Division 2 last season. The boys showed great effort and commitment throughout the game, and look forward to home advantage for this Thursday’s game against Killeavy. Training on Tuesday at 7pm sharp.

We had a busy week with good results in matches against Cullyhanna and Forkhill. Making good progress, keep up the hard work boys! Training as usual on Monday and Friday 6-7.30pm.

Club Keeley
In recent weeks committee members have been out and about promoting Club Keeley, the club’s newly introduced fundraising initiative. The scheme – named after one of our club’s greatest servants Peter Keeley – is designed to help fund our new minibus, which will be used weekly by more than 200 children who form our underage panels, and to assist with the overall running costs of the club. With maximum participation, this ambitious initiative will be of huge benefit to our club and put us on a firm financial footing. If you would like to be a part of Club Keeley, or feel you can contribute in any way, please fill out and return a Club Keeley form, which have been distributed among members, or contact any committee member. Your support is very much appreciated.

The annual Armagh GAA Feis for part-scholarships takes place in the Ceannáras on Tuesday 28th April at 7pm. Junior A League Round 1
Ballyhegan Davitts v Crossmaglen IIs
Ballyhegan opened their league campaign on Sunday against familiar opponents in Crossmaglen IIs. The teams met on 4 occasions last term, all of which were close encounters and it proved no different this time around.
Heavy rain over the weekend led to poor conditions underfoot on the day which caused errors on both sides.
The home team started better laying siege on the visitor’s goal with Plunkett McCormack and Rory McKeever creating early goal chances only to be denied on both occasions.
Midfielder John Guy fielded a great ball and launched another attack which created a scramble in the box and after another effort on goal, a shot of the post, the ball eventually found its way out to County U-21 player Jack Rafferty who sensibly fisted over to open the scoring after 6 minutes.
Goalkeeper and captain Jonny McKeever made his way up the pitch soon after to convert a 50′ and double the lead. Young corner forward Conal McKeever then increased the lead further with a nice effort from the let following good work from Paul Nixon. Conal was on target again 5 minutes later with a free and almost immeadiately after kicked his third of the half again following good interchange play with Paul Nixon.
Cross opened their account on 20 minutes with 2 scores in quick succession, the first from play and a free kick a minute later. Full forwad Paul Nixon replied for the Davitts soon after following good build up play from substitute Shane McKeever and Conal McKeever.
Just before half time Cross were awarded and penalty that was hit low to the right and wide. Ballyhegan had time for one more attack which resulted in a Jack Rafferty hitting a fantastic free from far out on the right hand side.

Ballyhegan were quick off the mark in the second half with 2 points in the first minute. Corner forward Daniel McKeever scored following good hassling on the defender then half forward Rory McKeever pointed after being on the receiving end of a great ball from Shane McKeever.
Cross pulled 2 back before Conal McKeever hit another free and Jack Rafferty blasted over on 40 minutes. The visitors replied with a goal a minute later with Plunkett McCormack hitting a point for the home side straight away. The South Armagh men then had two very profitable attacks both of which resulted in goals for them and, very much against the run of play, saw them go in to a one point lead with 10 minutes to go.
Goalkeeper Jonny McKeever was once again on target with a long range free to bring the game level. Cross added 2 more points to lead with 2 minutes to go. The Davitts however, to their credit, kept fighting and won 2 free kicks, both of which were converted by Conal McKeever, the second one being the last kick of the ball earing a draw.

Ballyhegan played some great football for the majority of the game and really should have been out of sight. They will be extremely disappointed with being caught out and conceding 3 goals in the second half but can take credit for coming back to avoid defeat.

The League opened for Sarsfields meeting new additions to the 1st Division, away to Peadar Ó Diornín’s pitch in Forkhill, on a bright afternoon with a strong wind crossing the pitch in favour of the home team. Forkhill managed an early lead with two points from play and a goal from Barry Shannon but Sarsfields’ Michael Stevenson was on form throughout the day scoring four early points with two from frees.
Colin Stevenson managed a point for the Hoops men before Forkhill scored five successive points with help from Paddy Burns, Marcus McKeown and Jemar Hall. With a late Sarsfields point, the home team kept ahead 1-8 to 0-6 at half time.
Darren McAvoy saves and feeds the ball out
A hungrier Forkhill prevailed in the second half, seeking their inaugural 1st division victory, testing Sarsfields’ goalkeeper Darren McAvoy to make a valiant save before Jemar Hall scored a long range point from play. Mark Reynolds and Eamon McGeown showed stronger presence in the second half for Sarsfields with support play in the middle of the field.
15 minutes into the second half, Ciaran Smyth scored what would be Forkhill’s last point of the day and Michael Stevenson converted Sarsfields’ first point of the second half, late in the final 10 minutes.
Sarsfields’ captain Brian Lavery ran strongly deep into the forward line and was only to be denied a late goal by the crossbar which would have put Sarsfields ahead. A late goal by Mark Reynolds wasn’t enough to keep Forkhill from snatching their first victory with overall a much stronger performance and final score Forkhill 1-10 Sarsfields 1-9.
