Scór
Congratulations to our magnificent Scór Na nÓg novelty act who won another county title with a magnificent performance in Killeavy last Saturday night. Our young dramatists (Mary Donnelly, Diarmuid Brecknell, Oran Murray, Colum Donnelly and Dermot Savage) continue to excel and we wish them every success as they go on to compete in Ulster. Hopefully another All Ireland final might be on the cards.
Unfortunately despite superb efforts from our Quiz team (James Carragher, Aine Murray and Diarmuid Brecknell), Recitation act (Oran Murray) and Ballad Group (Orla McDonnell, Erin O Reilly, Dearbhla McMahon and Karen Quinn), their great run ended at the county final stage. However all participants can be very proud of their achievements as they displayed their talents to great effect.
On a final note, huge congratulations are due to the mentors who have dedicated so much time to helping this talented bunch of youngsters fulfil their potential so sincere thanks to Margaret Donnelly, Bernie Donnelly, Karen Murray, Patricia McCrink and Mary Ziegeslow.

UNDERAGE PRESENTATIONS
It was a very busy weekend around the club with the underage presentations taking place. Due to the large number of teams and players across all four codes, it was decided to spread the event over two nights. Proceedings began with all club sponsors being thanked for their continued contribution towards the development of our club. Camogie awards were first on the agenda. Rachel Mc Neill was awarded the title of Most Improved U8 and Caitlin Byrne won Player of the Year. At U10 grade, Emma Grant was declared Most Improved Player, with Aofie Byrne & Emma Rice jointly receiving Player of the Year.
It was a great evening for the entire U12 panel as they received their league winner’s medals. Siobhan McKinley & captain, Catherine McDonnell were declared joint Player of the Year, while Lisa Quinn received the Most Improved Player award. This year we welcomed the introduction of a hurling school of excellence to cater for 4-10 year olds with the goal of moving these teams forward each year until we have a team competing at every level. Currently there is an U6, U8 & U10 team which is a total of 40–50 children playing hurling every Friday evening. All of the young hurlers were recognised on the night. Football was next up.
The numbers attending training across all teams was excellent all year and we sincerely hope this continues into 2015. Our youngest teams, the U6’s, U8’s & U10’s were highly commended for their effort and dedication all year and all received appreciatory awards. The U12 Most Improved winner was Eamon O’Sullivan, while Fionn Downey & Adam Mc Donnell were both named Player of the Year. Pierce McGlade was awarded U14 Most Improved Player, with Player of the Year going to Nathan Murphy & James Bennett. Ladies Football within the club has had an injection of energy of the past twelve months and we hope that it continues to grow over the coming years.
Caroline O’Hare and Leona Quinn ran a very successful Gaelic 4 Girls initiative for girls aged 8-14 and all of the young players received recognition for their efforts. The U16 team were a great bunch of girls and represented the club with pride. Ellen Daly & Emma Quinn were jointly awarded Player of the Year. Thanks must go to everyone who helped out in any capacity to make presentation weekend a resounding success, including the highly respected members of our club who presented the awards. A huge thank you must also go out to all parents and supporters who made the effort to attend the awards. Thanks also to all of the coaches and indeed everyone who helps out on matchday, without whom we would struggle to function. Finally congratulations to all of our young players and award winners on the night.
Let’s hope 2015 can be a great year on the underage playing fields with more success to celebrate next November. We hope to have all photos from both nights uploaded within the next few days.
1964 GOLDEN JUBILEE CELEBRATION
After recognising the efforts of the young, up and coming stars of our club on Friday and Saturday, the heroes from the past took centre stage on Sunday. There was a wonderful atmosphere around the club grounds, as the players from the 1950’s and 1960’s were invited to attend a reception. It was great to have so many of the 1964 team in attendance. This was the very first team from Mullaghbawn to win a Senior Armagh Championship. Some pictures from the event will soon be available to view on our twitter & facebook sites and in next week’s notes.

Crossmaglen Rangers GFC
Appearing in our eighteenth Ulster Championship in nineteen years you would think one would have become used to it after all these years but the nerves in the stomach and the sense of anticipation never diminish. As supporters of Crossmaglen Rangers we have been privileged to support one of the greatest club teams ever. The joy that they bring to the community can never be quantified. It was with the same sense of anticipation we made the long trip to Omagh to play St. Edna’s.
Games against Tyrone side are never easy and this one proved to be no different. Before the throw in a minute silence was observed in the memory of the late Tommie Coleman. From the throw in and playing with the advantage of a strong it was Rangers who made the better start and after ten minutes were three points to the good. All this good work was undone when a mistake in defence allowed our opponents in for a goal to leave the sides level. We did not let this mistake unsettle us as over the next fifteen minutes we scored five points to the oppositions one . We then finished the half strongly with a well taken goal to leave the half time score Rangers 1 – 8 St. Edna’s 1 – 1.
On the resumption it was Rangers who were firs on the scoreboard with a point from play but unfortunately that was as good as it got for us as over the next ten minutes we squandered three or four good scoring opportunities by dropping the ball short into the keepers arms thus enabling him to set up counter attacks which resulted in scores. The Omagh boys were beginning to settle and find their rhythm and four points in a row had them back in the game. To make matters worse our opponents had introduced a confrontational edge to the game and when weak referring did not penalise this our boys allowed themselves to be drawn and in the space of five minutes we lost two players.
The fat was really in the fire and a well worked goal left the sides level with a couple of minutes left to play. Despite our best efforts we conceded two points in the closing period to go down to defeat. Final score Ranger 1 – 9 St. Edna’s 2 – 8. While defeat is disappointing we have to show our appreciation to the boy who put in such hard work to get us to this stage. On reflection this was a disappointing performance while we had a good first half we should have gone in with greater lead as we failed to capitalise on a number of scoring opportunities. The second half proved to be a disaster as all we had to show for our efforts was a solitary point.
Somehow we seeme to drift away from our tried and trusted style with our build up becoming more laboured and complicate and the ball not going direct into our forwards. The most galling thing about our performance was that we had not learned from our previous game with this opposition. We lost our focus and discipline and allowed ourselves to be drawn in to confrontation rather than walk away and as a result lost two players. Hopefully lessons will be learned and we will come back stronger next year.
Executive Committee
The monthly meeting of the above committee will take place in the Rangers Hall on Tuesday 4th November@ 9.00pm. sharp. All members are requested to attend.
Sympathy
It is with deep regret we learned of the death of Brea Higgins aunt of our minor manager Kieran Donnelly and sister of former player Patsy Kieran’s and member Tony. To her son to Kieran her brothers Patsy, Tony, Martin sisters Bernadette Muriel we extend our deepest sympathy. May she rest in peace.
Walking Track
The new walking track at the club is now for members to use. However it must be stressed that dogs are not permitted on any part of the club premises at any time including council pitches and walking track. Those using the walking track are asked to ensure that they close all gates behind them to keep all stray dogs out. If these arrangements are not adhered to we will have no option but to lock all gates and restrict the use of the track to specify times where users can be supervised. We cannot permit the continued dog fouling to continue any longer.
Meetings
Members are reminded that if you require a room for a meeting you should check with Shane @ 0872755227 or Marguerite @ 08660479693 re availability.
Cairde Raonaithe Na Croise
Our club provides facilities for twenty four teams. In order to meet increased demand and provide facilities which our young people and members deserve the club are embarking on the second phase of our development programme. In order to do so the club must raise a large amount of money. Members can help out by joining Raonaithe Na Croise and agreeing to donate £20 per month for three years. By pledging your support you will be helping your club meet the challenge of the future.
Lotto
The Lotto provides much needed funds for the day to day running of the club and we would ask our members for their support. Tickets cost £1 and can be purchased from any member of the committee or in the local shops. If you feel you could sell some tickets no matter how few please contact Peadar Mc Coy or any member of the committee. For example if you could sell 10 tickets a week it would raise £500 pound a year which would go a long way in covering the travel costs of one of our underage sides

Madden Raparees GAC
Underage Presentation Night
Madden Community Centre was packed to the rafters on Sunday evening past for the Annual Underage Presentation Night. The Camogie club kicked off the proceedings with recently crowned Armagh Premier Player of the Year Kelly Mallon the special guest there to present the future Camogs of the parish with their awards. It was soon the turn of the football club where we welcomed Armagh County Senior players Mark Shields and our own Ciaran Rafferty as well as our two County Minor players Conor Grimley and Donal Rafferty to present the awards.
The first two players honoured were Shea Vallely and James O’Hara who had represented the club magnificently during the Mid-Armagh Primary Schools Skills tournament throughout the year.
We were privileged to have quite a number of our players invited to participate at the half time games held in the Athletic Grounds and further afield this past year. Each of the players were presented with a plaque to honour their achievements. The players honoured were Oisin Tohill, Jack Murphy, Eoin Grimley, John Hughes, Aoife Quinn, Louise Mallon, Shane Grimley, Shannon Maguire, Shea Vallely, Oisin O’Hara, Courtney Fisher, James O’Hara and Hannah Gray. Congratulations to our entire Under 12 team who played at half time in Clones during the Armagh v Monaghan Senior Game. The club would like to take this opportunity to thank the teachers in the primary school for all their help coaching and developing our players and taking them to all the various blitzes throughout the year.
Individually it was time to reward the children for their dedication and committment for the entire year. Stephen McGarvey and Johnnie Smith kicked it off with our youngest team the U-6’s with upwards of twenty children on stage to receive their medals a lot of praise must be given to both Stephen and Johnnie for their tireless work down at the field each and every Friday night. Next up was Danny Donnelly and the U-8’s it was the case of much the same for this group of players with almost thirty players honoured.
The U-8’s participated in a series of Go-Game blitzes during the year culminating in the Moy Tournament the lads were unfortunate to come up against a strong Clann Eireann team on the day who were the eventual winners of the tournament. The highlight of the year for this team will be victories over Pearse Ogs and local rivals Keady. Thanks are also extended to the management team of Jim Moore, Gary Comiskey, Tim Hughes, David Loughran and a special word of thanks to Paula Grimley without whom participation for our high number of girls at this level wouldn’t have been possible.
Aidan Hughes and the U-10’s were next up, this group of players performed heroically all year and were unfortunate that they had to wait to the final tournament of the year to get their hands on silverware winning the inaugural Eire Og Tournament. Although this was an eleven a side tournament all of the panel was rewarded for their efforts throughout the year as it was a real team effort with the trainings renowned for their fierce competition, each and every player brought the best out in one an other and this was evident in their performances as anyone who witnessed this team in action would testify. Aidan paid tribute to the help of his extended management team of Paula Rafferty, Cillian and Enda Mallon and Caolan Vallely for all their help throughout the year again with a special word of thanks to Paula Rafferty for coming on board in her first year coaching and assisting with the girls at this level.
Finally it was the turn of Jason Tohill and the U-12’s. The U-12’s participated in a Go-Games league as well as an all county league towards the latter stages of the year. This team performed exceptionally well over the course of the year and were in the running for league honour right until the end of the season. Unfortunately the lads slipped up in an extremely tight game against fierce rivals Granemore and their fate was taken from their own hands. The favours they so desperately required from other teams did not come to pass in the end and the lads had to settle for second place. The team was presented with medals as a reward for the effort put in during the year. There were also prestigious awards presented to two members of the squad in form of the Most Improved Player Of The Year and the Player Of The Year.
It is often said that being a goalkeeper is a thankless job, a hero one minute and a villain the next. One thing is for sure this Madden team had a lot to thank their goalkeeper for throughout the year as without him the lads would not have been in the position the found themselves in come the end of the season. Indeed at the start of the year the management team had trouble even finding a goalkeeper. It is testament to the character of young Shane Grimley that he stood up to the task and stepped in between the posts and followed in the footsteps of his great uncle Kevin ‘Rocky’ Grimley where he performed heroically when there. Thankfully for the lads Shane wasn’t just as vocal as his uncle when it came to words of encouragement to his teammates. Shane has gone from strength to strength over the year and hopefully will continue to improve as the years go on where he will no doubt aim to join many of his older cousins in the senior ranks.
The management had a particularly tough task when it came to choosing the Player Of The Year at this level, something I’m sure nobody in the club would envy with the wealth of talent at their disposal this was never going to be an easy job. I’m sure there were many sleepless nights in the Tohill and Smith households before the white smoke bellowed. When the result was announced the entire club was in agreement with the decision to award Tiarnan Woods the U-12 Player Of The Year for 2014. Tiarnan put in a series of performances throughout the year, a slow starter, but when the game was in the melting point Tiarnan was the lad in which the whole team turned to for some inspiration, be that fielding a ball in the middle of the park or going on a marauding run down the field and kicking a point.
Tiarnan commanded the middle of the field with an authority very rarely witnessed at this level, not unlike how his father Johnny did for many years in the red and black. Tiarnan was also chosen to represent Madden in Croke Park at the All County U-12 Skills day a further reminder of the talent that this young lad possesses. Jason extended thanks to the fellow members of his management team Stephen, Francis and Teresa Smith and Benedict McCusker for their help throughout the year as well as the New Jersey sponsor Smith Fire and Safety.
The evening was drew to a close with our guest Mark Shields offering some kind words of wisdom towards our budding young stars of the future about working hard and listening to their coaches in order to fulfil their potential. It was a great night and I have no doubt the children, coaches and parents are already eagerly awaiting 2015.
