Armagh GAA club notes, May 21

Madden Raparees GFC

U12

The U-12’s recent run of victories came to an end on Saturday last as we lost by the minimum margin away to Armagh Harps. Both teams found the strong cross wind difficult in what proved a low scoring encounter. The loss of Oisin Tohill due to injury after a heavy challenge did not help Madden’s cause as we squandered some good opportunities, particularly in the first half.

Nonetheless the management maintain there were lots of positives to be taken from the game as the lads continue to defend well and create good chances, with their decision making in front of the posts in particular something to work on this coming week in training. The lads will benefit from no match this week after a heavy schedule of late. Training however will continue on Thursday evening at 7pm.

U-16’s & Minors

Both our U-16 and Minor teams will have no fixtures for the next three weeks owing to exam commitments. We will keep you informed of when games for these sides are resumed.

Senior Intermediate League

Our senior team returned to league action on Sunday afternoon looking to build upon a championship victory over the league leaders Clann Eireann a mere six days ago. The lads new victory in Madden against a vulnerable Silverbridge side who have only won one of their last four league outings would see them not too far off the summit.

Madden showed their intent from the very off winning the throw up and driving straight through the heart of the Silverbridge defence they conjured up a goal chance but failed to raise the green flag. The visitors got the first score of the game a few minutes later but it was to be their last for the best part of the half as Madden entered a period of supremacy scoring four points in a row from Niall Grimley, Aron McKenna (2) and a Ciaran Rafferty free kick.

Silverbridge responded with two points of their own from play to bring them within two points of the hosts however these points came either side of a series of wides from the Raparees, a stern wind blowing against them did the lads no favours but it was the decisions by some of their players in front of goals that were of more concern. The lads did finish the half brightly with a final impressive point from distance from Aron McKenna to run in leading by two points at the break. Half Time Madden 0-05 Silverbridge 0-03.

The second half much like last weekend proved to be a cagier affair with the men from South Armagh scoring within minutes of the game being resumed. This left the minimal between the two sides. Madden once more responded superbly and raced down the field where they found themselves in a position with the goal was at their mercy, only for an athletic save from the goalkeeper who managed to turn the ball over his own crossbar.

Niall Grimley further added to Maddens lead with an impressive 50m free kick. This left three points between the sides with 20minutes of the half still remaining. Silverbridge again reduced the deficit to a single points scoring two from play before Kyle Morgan opened his account for the day with a point from play.

The visitors scored an equally impressive 50m free to once more reduce their arrears to just a single point. The visitors were now on top and showed their desire to add to their solitary victory in the league when they dissected the Madden defence and finished their attack with the ball in the back of the net.

The lads have now conceded eight goals in five games, yet it is their reaction once they concede these goals which impresses the management and spectators alike this game was no different with points from Ciaran Rafferty and a Paul O’Reilly free kick levelled the game with five minutes remaining. The lads had their chances in the final few minutes of the game although it was not meant to be on the day and the visitors ended up walking away with the spoils when their corner forward stroke over a free kick in injury time to win the game by a single point.

It is unknown yet whether this defeat will play a significant part in the ambitions of this team for their season, however should their promotion hopes go down to the wire you cant help but feel this was one result that got away. Had we been more clinical in front of goal in the first half then there is no doubt we would have been coming out of this game on the opposite side of this result. The lads will not have much time to reflect on this result as they face a trip away to Dorsey on Friday night at 8pm where they will look to bounce back to winning ways.

Intermediate Championship Draw

The club have been drawn against Whitecross in the next round of the intermediate championship. The game will take place on the weekend of 14th, 15th and 16th of August with the venue yet to be decided. If the senior encounter between the two sides last year is anything to go by this will be a mouth-watering encounter between two very evenly matched sides and players and supporters alike are already eagerly awaiting this encounter.

Brian Og Maguire Sevens

The clubs senior team have been invited to participate in the now annual Brian Og Maguire Sevens competition in Lisnaskea this coming Saturday. The event is held in memory of Brian Og Maguire an aspiring young footballer from Fermanagh who tragically lost his life three years ago in an industrial accident while at work. Brian had represented his club and county at the highest level and captained his Lisnakea side to an All-Ireland intermediate title mere months before his death.

Madden are honoured to attend this festival of football and have been handed a tough draw in the group stages where they will pit their wits against current Fermanagh Senior League Champions Ederney and two Fermanagh county representative sides. The club would like to wish Ronan, Brendan, Jamie and the players all the very best of luck in this competition.

Reserve Championship

The reserve team under the guidance of Brendan McGuinness travel to Davitt Park in Lurgan on Wednesday evening where they play Clann na nGael in the Intermediate Reserve Championship. The club would like to wish Brendan and all the players the very best of luck as they look to reclaim the cup they won back in 2012.

St Patrick’s GFC

Armagh Junior Championship

St. Patrick’s 11s 0-12 Ballyhegan 2-8

Despite narrowly losing out in this entertaining tie played at the Athletic Grounds last Saturday evening overall Cullyhanna will be reasonably happy with their performance as they more than matched a side operating in a division above them. Indeed had St. Pat’s not spurned a last minute penalty the result could have been different. With two very evenly matched teams it was always going to be a bit of a hard luck story for whoever came out of tightly contested tie.

The first half was a cagey enough affair with scores hard to come by as both defences were on top. St. Pat’s could however have established a significant advantage only to be thwarted by two fine point blank saves from the Ballyhegan keeper. The half-time score of 0-4 to 0-3 to the advantage of the eventual winners didn’t really do justice to the efforts of Cullyhanna in that opening half.

The second-half opened with the sides exchanging points before Ballyhegan enjoyed a great spell when they grabbed 2-2 in just 5 minutes. It was a major setback for Cullyhanna considering how closely matched the sides had been up to that point but in fairness they never let their heads drop and showed great courage and drive to set about clawing back the 8 point deficit.

Having recovered from the shock of that blitz St. Pat’s gradually got a grip at mid-field and for the next 20 minutes hit some excellent points so that by the last minute of normal time they had reduced the deficit. Then came their great chance when awarded a penalty. The shot was well taken but in fairness once again the winners had to thank their keeper for a great save.

A big blow but once again Cullyhanna fought back to reduce the margin to a single point deep into time added on. Ballyhegan had the last say with another point which signalled the end of the game.

A good showing in general from the team with many good performances. Despite the two goals the defence did well overall while the midfield had an excellent second-half. Up front the forwards worked hard but just lacked that bit of potency in front of goal when changes came their way.

Team: Fergal Murphy, Conor McShane, Francis McMullen, Paraic Brecknell, Cathal Donnelly, Sean Nugent, Sean O’Neill, Peter O’Neill, Ciaran O’Neill (0-3), Ciaran Nugent, Paudie Mackin, Shane McKeever (0-2), Rory O’Neill (0-1), Kyle Reid (0-3), Aodhan Conlon (0-2) : subs used: Paul Donnelly, Phelim Savage (0-1), Kevin Hoey.

Armagh Senior League

Carrickcruppen 0-10 St. Patrick’s 3-15

Cullyhanna got back on the league winning trail with a routine enough victory at Carrickcruppen on Sunday afternoon. Playing with the advantage of the strong wind St. Pat’s were generally on top and at the break had built up a comfortable 9-1 lead and indeed but for a few mislaid last passes could have had a few majors on the scoreboard. A brace of points from Gareth Mackin and Robbie Tasker in the opening minutes of the half suggested that they were well capable of notching scores against the wind.

Cruppen did come into it and also had a brace of well taken minors. In the 10th minute came a decisive score when a good passing opened up the home defence to let Aidan Nugent palm to the net. Three minutes later a similar attacking move saw mid-fielder Barry McConville on the end of the move to also palm to the net.

Leading by 15 points the game was as good as over before the match had even entered the final quarter. From there to the end it was a matter of playing out time but Cullyhanna still had enough hunger for scores to see Robbie Tasker fire to the net for his team’s third goal.

A good enough win considering the squad has been hit with a lot of injures at the moment and it has been a chance for some of the younger players to get their chance and they have done well.

Team: Deaglan McArdle, Sean óg Irwin, Stephen Reel, Kieran McCooey, Francis O’Rourke, Gary McCooey, Paudie McCreesh, Malachy Mackin, Barry McConville (1-0), Kieran Hoey (0-2), Aidan Nugent (1-0), Gareth Mackin (0-2), Robbie Tasker (1-4), Tony Donnelly (0-4), Shea Hoey (0-1): subs used: Cathal Donnelly (0-1), Phelim McArdle, Peter McKeever.

U16 Championship

St. Pat’s progressed to the next round of the U16 Div 2 Championship after a comprehensive victory over O’Doirnin Blues in Cullovillle on Thursday last. The team was never in trouble throughout the hour and had impressive performances from goalkeeper, Shea McParland, defenders Hugh McMahon, Diarmuid Brecknell  and Emmett Kelly. Ross McQuillan dominated midfield while up front Dylan Rooney and James Toner caught the eye.

Armagh League First Division Sarsfields GFC vs St Paul’s

Sunday 17th May 2014

Final score Sarsfields 2-14 St Pauls 0-12

Sunday afternoon saw Sarsfields’ second home match of the year with Lurgan locals St Paul’s. Feeling the sting of recent defeats, Sarsfields started strong playing with a strong breeze in the first half. Paul McGeown scored the Hoops’ first point with a shot from play before St Pauls’ Peadar Nash responded to level the sides.

It was then that Sarsfields dominated with a goal from Thomas McAlinden and long range points from Eamon McGeown and Brian Lavery before Paul McGeown scored Sarsfields’ second goal aided by Paul McGaughey. With eight points separating the sides, St Pauls responded with a point from Rory Grimes.

However a few heavy exchanges resulted in St Pauls dropping down to fourteen men. St Pauls fought strong with a goal chance from Rory McCaughley denied by Darren McAvoy. Peadar Nash and Daniel McDonald added three more scores for St Pauls and with Paul McGeown adding one point for the home team, Sarsfields lead with half time score 2-6 St Pauls 0-6.

With the wind in St Pauls’ favour, the away side began strong with three points from Darren Fox, Niall McPartland and Ryan Lawless. However Sarsfields remained ahead with forwards Colin Stevenson, Thomas McAlinden and Paul McGeown keeping the home side with a comfortable lead. The next five minutes would be a story of ‘hitting the wood work’ as both the cross bar and post prevented two goal chances for Sarsfields from the Stevenson brothers.

After twenty five minutes, St Pauls managed to replenish the scoreboard with only two points from Niall McPartland and Peadar Nash. Sarsfields won with a comfortable lead throughout with final score 2-14 to 0-12. Sarsfields seniors’ next match is away to Dromintee this Sunday 24th May 2pm.

Sarsfields team: Darren McAvoy, Brian Kerr, Ciaran Kerr, Darragh O’Hanlon, Kevin O’Hagan, Declan Breen, Niall Kerr, Brian Lavery, Eamon McGeown, Michael Stevenson, Paul McGaughey, Mark Reynolds, Thomas McAlinden, Paul McGeown, Colin Stevenson. Silverbridge Harps GFC

Main Sponsors: Coole Fuels & Donnelly’s Wholesale

Senior: Our senior men won a very hard fought victory on Sunday against a dogged Madden side. Against the wind in the first half, we worked hard and opened the scoring with a well-taken point from Cormac McAvoy. This was followed by points from Joe Rock and Eoghan Burns and we were happy to be two adrift at half time.

In the second half, points from Pauraic Keating, Paddy Reel and Brendan Byrne, who had a great match at midfield, were cancelled out by good passages of play and scores from Madden. However the deadlock was broken between the 47th and 49th minute with a 1-1 strike by Eoghan Burns which put us two in front.

Two frees from Madden got them back on track until the final minute when a free, won by Joe Rock, was converted by Eoghan Burns and we finished one point winners.  Next Sunday at home v Keady with 2.00pm throw-in.
