Intermediate League

Dorsey Emmetts v Ballyhegan Davitts

Ballyhegan made the long trip to South Armagh on Sunday, to play fellow promotion rivals from last year, Dorsey Emmetts, both sides seeking their first win at the third attempt in the Intermediate league.

Dorsey were first on the scoreboard, registering a point in the opening minute of the game.

Ballyhegan responded well, James McKeever hit a point with his right foot, a nice score under pressure, in the next attack.

Philip Kelly put the Davitts in front, following some tenacious work from Mark McKeever, who intercepted a Dorsey attack & burst out of his own half to create the chance.

James McKeever, looking lively, got his second point of the game before the quarter hour mark, another tidy finish from 30 metres, with his right boot, after selling his marker a dummy to create space.

The Ballyhegan defence were caught out a few minutes later. A high shot came back off the upright, a player in green and yellow was first to react, finishing the ball to the net & putting the hosts in front again.

The goal was followed on the scoreboard by another Dorsey point from a free kick, however Ballyhegan pulled level with two points in two minutes. First Jack Wilson was fouled within shooting range, Philip Kelly duly obliged, splitting the points from the resulting free kick. Then Mark Hughes won possession from the kick out, raced through goal-wards and blasted the ball over the bar.

Eoin Reynolds continuously found space in behind the Dorsey defence in the first half, & Jack Wilson picked him out with a sublime through ball in the 23rd minute, to put “Bert” through on goal. He rounded the keeper and finished to the net, a well worked goal to delight the visiting fans!

The hosts finished the half well though, kicking and fisting points before the half time whistle, leaving the Davitts advantage at the minimum, with a difficult second half against the wind awaiting.

Half Time: Dorsey 1.04 Ballyhegan 1.05

If anything the conditions seemed to worsen in the second half. Both teams struggled to adapt. Ballyhegan had the first real chance of the half, ten minutes in, Paul Courtney hitting an a shot from an angle, that dipped to hit the cross bar, then the left post, the ball came out across the goal and a superb run and diving effort from Jack Wilson came off the right hand post and away to safety!

Dorsey then took advantage of a kick-out that held in the wind, to kick the first point in the second half 12 minutes in.

Young Conor McCann palmed the resulting huge Jonny McKeever kick out to Mark Hughes, who played Jack Wilson through to restore the Davitt’s lead, with a well taken point on the run.

Dorsey took a point advantage entering the final ten minutes of the game, with two more converted free kicks, and looked to score another only Tony Keegan using all those years of experience, not for the first time in the game, positioned himself perfectly to intercept the ball breaking the Dorsey attack & setting up the Davitts counter Philip Kelly again the man to kick the big score, the sides level approaching the full time mark.

The Davitt’s support thought they had won the first points of the season, when Philip Kelly again pointed from a free kick in injury time, however there was still time for some late drama, as the Dorsey attack sprung a late challenge and as the ball broke in front of the goals, it was a nippy Dorsey forward who dashed in and put the ball in the net, a cruel way to lose a tight game.

Full Time: Dorsey 2.07 Ballyhegan 1.08

Jack Wilson stood out for the Davitts, whilst Tony Keegan and Mark McKeever continued their good form in defence. Philip Kelly was the pick of the forwards.

U-10 Challenge Match Sunday 28th April 2013

Thomas Davis  Corrinshego 2-8  Whitecross 4-2

Thomas Davis Corrinshego U-10’s had their first outing of the year when they drew with a competitive Whitecross team at Corrinshego on Sunday. Played in bright sunshine Corrinshego were on top from the start through Dean Bradley and Ronan Casey who performed heroics at midfield.

With Ciaran Higgins working hard in the forwards, Corrinshego were always  in contention. Special mention to Jarlath Jennings who played a ‘stormer’ at center-halt back and prevented many a Whitecross attack. When switched to corner back Danny Sheilds had an influential impact on the game. Other to impress were Michael Mallon who started in goals, Holly Loye and Lucy Brown who never gave up. This was an encouraging start for our young cubs, especially Ronan Casey who finished the game with 1-4. Corrinshego would like to thank Henry McCloy who  refereed  the game.

Under 14 Football / Peil Faoi 14

Corrinshego v Clady Emmetts

This second league match of the season for corrinshego u14s was without doubt the most difficult of the season so far for the young team but also the most rewarding. This was an old fashioned game of football where the team had to dig in and fight for this most deserving of wins and that’s exactly what they did.

Goal chances were at a premium in the first half and the team had to rely on the point scoring of Ryan Gray and Adam Loughran who both slotted over three points a piece.

It was a rare feeling for the corrinshego team to be behind at half time as the they trailed off 2-2 to 0-6 at the break. However after the break and finally plugging the gaps at the back the team responded with true grit and restricted Clady to a measly 1-2 in the second half, while the boys scored 2-2 from play. It was captain Niall McShane getting another goal in successive weeks that eventually brought the team back into the game and Conor Jennings scoring the point of the game after a fine second half from centre half back that sealed the win.

No doubt there are sterner tests ahead but this was an important win and one which will definitely breed confidence for the season ahead. Well done boys!

Under 16 Football / Peil Faoi 16

Tomás Dáibhis 0-08 Eimeid Bhéal Leice 4-08

The Under 16’s got a harsh lesson in their first home game against Belleek Emmetts (Dorsey & Belleek) at St.Pauls school pitch last Thursday night. The game started fairly evenly with both sides exchanging points from frees & play. Lee Courtney was exerting his influence at half forward continually running at their defence winning numerous frees but our shooting let us down on most of these opportunities. With 20 minutes played we had our noses in front 0-04 to 0-03 but the visitors got in for goal from a wayward pass & despite the gallant effort from Ronan McMahon in goals it somehow squeezed into the corner. We replied immediately with a point from Declan loye but with the half almost up another misdirected pass fell to a Belleek man who left it 2-04 to 0-05 in their favour at the break.

We immediately reduced the deficit from a point from Lee Courtney on the restart. The lads battled hard to get a foothold in the game with both sides going hard at it but we couldn’t translate the possession to scores with numerous wides whereas the visitors keep the scoreboard ticking keeping their 2 goal cushion intact. The visitors finished the game with 2 further majors both coming from defensive mistakes as we pushed hard going forward but on the night we can have no complaints as the Belleek Emmetts side were worthy winners. Lee Courtney & Declan Loye were outstanding for Thomas Davis with Keyonis Crozier putting in a decent shift but it wasn’t definitely an off night for the majority off the team. With a few lads to come back to the squad next week we know we can do a lot better in the championship next week

Training continues every Sunday Morning at 10.45am at the Club Grounds. New members welcome. Contact Anthony Havern 07805853032

Under 18 Football / Peil Faoi 18

Monday night saw the minor team playing their first fixture at home. Played in blustery conditions in Whitecross the lads took on the unbeaten Ballymacnab team. The lads started the quicker playing with a strong wind the first two points coming from Phelim Finnegan, this was quickly followed up with a point from Charlie Magill followed by two brilliant long range points from midfielder Jordan King. Ballymacnab scored their first two points of the game from two free kicks but the boys were on top all over the field with Ballymacnab playing a long ball game into a big physical number 14. Some super play from from the half backs linking with the midfielders set up another few points from the boot of Sean Thompson, Phelim Finnegan and the speedy Jordan King to leave the boys in front by 7 points then a quick ball into Decky Loye who lost his marker was unlucky hitting the post with his low shot to the corner. Halftime score 0-10 till 0-3.

With the wind at Ballymacnabs back the second half was always going to be backs against the wall and had the boys registered enough scores in the first half. The away team started the quicker with two points within the first 3 mins of play this was quickly followed by a 45 which took a deflection leaving goalkeeper David Hankin with no chance this was a big blow to the lads conceding 1-2 within five mins of the restart. With all the momentum with the visitors it was great defensive displays from Deaglen Jennings, Jammie Fields and Callan Connelly to stop the visitors scoring for the next ten mins. It took until 15 mins into the second half until we scored our first point coming from the boot of Charlie Magill, this gave the lads a timely boost and another one from Phelim Finnegan ( six points on the night ) to halt Ballymacnabs surge.Once again the away team started to get on top as the lads struggled to retain possession. With 10 mins to go a point from Mark McAteer and Decky Loye left us four in front with Ballymacnab giving everything, with a few frees the scores were level for the first time and time was up score at the final whistle 0-14 1-11. Despite the conditions some super football was played and a draw was a fair result on the night. Starting his first game Micheal McGrory had a good steady performance Niall Canning and Conor Loye put in solid displays. Next up is an away game tonight against Crossmaglen, come out and give these young lads some support.

Training continuing every Monday 7.30pm at the Club Grounds. New members welcome. Contact Tony Loye 07810883454.

Thomas Davis Corrinshego  0-16   Ponytzpass O’Hanlon’s 1-3

Thomas Davis Corrinshego kept their  unbeaten record intact but more  importantly had their first win of the year. This was a very comprehensive victory over a team which were unbeaten and were  leading  the division before the start of play.  With a midfield partnership of Ronie O’ Reilly and Ryan Mc Williams Corrinshego  were on top at mid field from the start, and in the opening minute Liam Quinn was unlucky  not to score. On 3 minutes Ronan O’Reilly scored an inspirational opening score. This was Ronan’s first outing since his long lat-off through injury. On 6 mins, Corrinshego doubled their total when Cathal Trainor scored a good point from out on the right. Aided by a very strong breeze Corrinshego  scored  again through Steven Trainor , from a pin-point pass from the ever improving Adrian McCourt.. On 19mins the industrious work by the Corrinshego forwards was evident when S. Trainor and Cathal Trainor interchanged with the ball, before releasing A. McCourt to score Corrinshego fourth point of the day to leave the score 0-4 to no score.  O’ Hanlon’s responded with a fine point through Sean Mor Morgan to reduce the deficit.  On 18mins R. McWilliams scored a point after been set up by Conor Loye.  Corrinshego kept pressing and  Liam Quinn  scored  another point after a battling performance by  J. Dinsmore sent him clear. Two minutes later on 19mins  L. Quinn added to both his and the Thomas Davis’ tally when he converted a 21m free after John McIlroy was hauled down by an O’Hanlon defender. On 23 mins Cathal Trainor kept the score board ticking  over with a nice point to leave the score  0-8 to 0-1. Two minutes later L. Quinn pointed a free after he himself  had his jersey  pulled by O’Hanlon’s number 5 Ronan O’ Cinneide.  On 28mins Corrinshego scored their tenth point of the half, through S. Trainor after good work by R. Mcwilliams. Corrinshego finished the half with another point through L.Quinn from a free. Half –time score Thomas Davis Corrinshego 0-11 O’Hanlon’s 0-1

On the resumption Corrinshego  replaced R. O’Reilly with D. Lenaghan at midfield and began were they left off. Although playing into a strong wind Corrinshego quickly scored  on 32mins from a fisted point  from David Murphy after been set up by the lively Deaghlan Jennings who was making his Corrinshego senior debut.  O’ Hanlon’s responded with two points to leave the scoreline  0-12 to 0-3 in favour of the men in maroon and white. On 36 mins L. Quinn scored another point. Moments later R. Mc Williams  increased the  lead  further with a long range point. Sean Thompson  replaced Stephen Trainor at C.H.F. and James Dinsmore scored another point. O’Hanlon’s kept plugging away and  scored a goal to reduce the deficit. Gerry O’Reilly replaced J. McIlroy  and Paddy Smith  replaced L.Quinn on 52 mins and David Murphy finished the scoring with a pointed free to leave the score 0-16 to 1-3 in favour of Corrinshego.  On 56 mins Nathan Burns made his Corrinshego debut when he replaced the injured D. Jennings. There were many positives from this game, especially the work of both R. Mc Loughlin and M. McAteer in defence  and the encouraging display from debutant D.  Jennings. Next up for Corrinshego is Phelim Brady’s on  Friday evening.

Crossmaglen Rangers

A very busy week on the football front with the seniors involved in two matches and our juniors involved in one we also had a number of teams engaged at under age level. Once again apologies to those who missed our game with Culloville as no one told me the game had been brought forward.

Senior League

Once again conditions were far from ideal for the game with a bitterly cold wind. As with our previous game this is one we should have won as we were in control for long periods, scoring seventeen points in the process but the concession of two soft goals left us with a mountain to climb It is also said that goals win matches and on this occasion it did, so we can have no complaint. Final score Rangers 0 – 17 Culloville 3 – 8.

Our second game of the weekend was away to Ballymacnab games against our opponents are never easy and this one was to prove no different. Taking advantage of the elements it was Rangers who exerted the early pressure and by the half time whistle had built up a comfortable lead. Half time score Rangers 2 – 8 Ballymacnab 1 – 1. On the resumption with the advantage of the elements who made the running picking of some good scores yet we were always able to keep in touch by scoring 1 – 2 to our opponents 1 –  4. Final score Rangers 3 – 10 Ballymacnab 2 – 5. It was nice to see Frannie Hanratty back home from Australia and he certainly showed he has not lost his goal scoring touch. Our next game is on Sunday the 12th May at home to Shane O’Neill’s with throw in @2. 00pm.

Junior League

No joy for the boys who went down to a narrow defeat to neighbours St. Pats . This is a game we could have one had we shown greater accuracy and composure in front of goal. Final score Rangers 2nds 1 – 6 St. Pats 2nds 0 – 10. Our next game is on Sunday the 12th May away to St. Michaels with throw in @ 2. 00pm.

U 18

The boy’s good start to the season continued with a good win over a game Keady side. This victory reflects the hard work the boys put in pre season but we cannot afford to take it easy as there are many difficult games ahead.

U 16

The boys kept up their go run of form with a win over neighbours St. Patricks

Congratulations

Congratulations to Aidan Rushe who was part of the Armagh minor team who won the Ulster Minor League. This honour is a just reward for Aidan who works hard to improve his skills.

Culloville Blues

Seniors

Culloville V Crossmaglen

The Senior team had a tough weekend in the league, with the first up a home game against local rivals Crossmaglen. Rangers were first to get on the scoreboard with 2 early points before Culloville got started with D Nugent scoring first for the Blues. Within the next four minutes 2 points were scored for each team, with the Culloville’s courtesy of J Kingham and N Rowland. Rangers then added a further 5 points before the Blues added a goal from P Kingham and a point by N Rowland. Rangers ended the half with another point leaving the half time score at Culloville Blues 1-04 , Crossmaglen Rangers 0-10. The first half started the same as the first with Rangers on the scoreboard first with 3 points. However, the Blues then got going with a bang with a total of 1-04 courtesy of N Rowland and 1 point from S McGeeney. Rangers added a further point before Culloville hit the net for the third time by P Caherty, two more points were added by Rangers before the final whistle came. Final Score Culloville Blues 3-09. Crossmaglen Rangers 0-17 and two vital league points gained.

Mullaghbawn

SPONSORSHIP

Thanks to our main club sponsors Aidan Strain Electrical and Slieve Gullion Springs Day Spa for their continued support.

MULLAGHBAWN  2.04

CLAN NA GAEL  2.08

Mullaghbawn took on Clan na Gael of Lurgan in their third league game of the year in Páirc Chú Chulainn. It was a difficult day for football with a cross-field breeze throughout the match. This resulted in a low scoring first-half and the score at the interval was; Mullaghbawn 1.01 Clan na Gael 1.03.

Mullaghbawn had a player sent off early in the second half; but, battled on admirably. We had our goalkeeper to thank for keeping us in the match, as he pulled off a great save from a penalty. Ten minutes into the second half, Mullaghbawn held a two point lead; but, on a day were scores were hard to come by, Clans vitally registered the next four points.

A Mullaghbawn free made it a one point game going into the final stages of the match; however, victory was secured for the visiting team with an injury-time goal.

The next game is fixed for next Friday evening (May 3rd) in Mullaghbawn, when against Eire Óg will be the opposition.

CHARLIE GRANT CUP

The Charlie Grant Juvenile Cup Final took place in Pairc Chu Chulainn on Saturday in glorious sunshine between Cumann Naomh Moininne, Cill Shleibhe, and Cumann Chlairsigh, Bheal Atha an Airgid.

Both teams played an attractive brand of football and it was the Cill Shleibhe team which emerged as victors in a hard fought encounter.

After the match everyone gathered in the clubrooms for the presentations. Margaret Grant presented the Charlie Grant Juvenile Cup to the captain of the victorious team, Michael Cromie.

Winner and runner-up medals were presented by Kieran Grant. Club president, John Crawley, presented the certificates to the competition’s outstanding players from all eight teams which took part.

The highlight of the proceedings was when Odhran Grant, Charlie’s grandson, made his debut as a presenter and presented a joint player of the tournament to Keith Garvey of Cill Shleibhe and Daniel McKeown of Beal Atha an Airgid. Congratulations to all award winners, who demonstrated that the future of Armagh football is secure for another generation.

The organising committee wishes to sincerely thank all of the clubs which supported the tournament; Margaret and the Grant family for their continued endorsement; the referees who willingly gave of their time; the catering committee members who provided food after the final; the field committee for marking the pitch and the committee of Cumann Chu Chulainn for permission to hold the event.

All proceeds will be donated to the Southern Area Hospice and we look forward to remembering Charlie again next year.

Killeavy

Makeshift Killeavy earn their point

Before this match began most Killeavy supporters would have been very happy with a draw.  Already short of a number of regulars through injury and work/college commitments, the team had been further rocked with the loss of Johnny McKeefry and towering midfielder James Donnelly.  However the team that took to the field had obviously not read the script as they got off to a scintillating start.  Playing direct football with the aid of a decent breeze and with Raymie Teggart as target man, Killeavy soon took the lead with a Conor King point.  Two minutes later better was to come when Teggart and King combined to put Ciaron O’Hanlon in the clear.  The young star still had plenty to do but he carried the ball to the edge of the square and coolly slotted home.  Unfortunately that was as good as it got for Killeavy as St. Patrick’s got their act together and forced Killeavy to hit long, aimless balls to an outnumbered forward line.

St. Pats scored their first point after 11 minutes but then proceeded to take control, hitting five more points in a row to take the lead 0.06 to 1.01.  Killeavy then lost midfielder James Duffy to injury but his replacement was Steven McDonnell who was to play a pivotal role for the rest of the game.  It was his free that got Killeavy going again and two more frees from Gerard Byrne and Steven again, had Killeavy in front at the half-time whistle.

Just like in the first half, Killeavy started well after the break and went further ahead with points from Byrne and McDonnell.  It was at this stage of the game that they maybe should have capitalised on their advantage but some poor decisions or poor execution meant that they missed a number of chances to put the game beyond reach.  It was St. Pats who finished the stronger with four points in the last quarter with Killeavy’s only reply being a magnificent effort from Barry O’Hara.  In the end it all game down to a St. Pat’s 45 with time rapidly running out.  A direct effort at goal may have allowed them to snatch the win but instead they played it short and the referee blew for full-time much to the consternation of the home support and the relief of those in green and black.

Killeavy definitely deserved the draw and maybe even the win but will be happy enough to gain something from a venue which has rarely been a happy hunting ground.  However, two more serious looking injuries were picked up and it is anybody’s guess what 15 will be fit to line up in their next encounter – away to St. Paul’s on Friday night.

Killeavy lift Charlie Grant trophy

Killeavy’s u14s won the Charlie Grant tournament, splendidly organised by the Mullaghbawn club, with a comprehensive victory over Silverbridge in the final.

Sizzling Success of Steak Night

One hundred and eighty steaks were served up to the members and friends of Killeavy in a spectacular fundraiser organised by our minor hurlers.  The three course meal  was absolutely first class in every respect and the service from the bow-tie wearing hurlers earned rave reviews.  An excellent evening’s entertainment throughout and surely something that popular demand will ensure that we see again.

Killeavy’s Shea Magill, Sean Boylan and Ryan Quinn pictured with Galway hurling star Joe Canning while on a weekend trip with Armagh’s schoolboy squad.  They played two games, winning both, and also watched the NHL semi-finals in Thurles.  Missing from the photograph is Oisin Cromie who was picked on the squad but was unable to travel.

  • Now that the Sunday morning training sessions are up and running for our u6, u8 & u10’s, we will hold our final Go-start on Thursday evening 2nd May from 6.00 – 7.00pm.  Following some guidance from a recent Orchard Academy Club mentoring course for u6-u8 games, the club’s coaches have some ideas which they would like to discuss with parents. We would be delighted if parents/guardians of all the u8 and u6 children could attend this last Thursday ‘Go-start’ session for a brief 15minute meeting at 6:30pm.
  • Games committee meeting at 9.00pm on Wednesday 1st May.  All teams are kindly asked to send a representative.
  • A Foundation coaching course for all GAA codes to be held in club on Friday 10th May from 6.00 – 10.00pm.  All coaches and assistants should have completed this course. Please give names to Games Committee asap.
  • Thank you to all who turned up for the Youth Club quiz on Friday night.  We could have done with a few more especially considering all the work that the committee had put into the event.  Nevertheless it was an enjoyable night with plenty of sandwiches to go round.
  • The club’s Youth Academy is now re-opened each Monday evening from 6.30 to 8.00pm. All ages are welcome.  The weekly cost of £2.50 (£6 per family) includes a drink and healthy snack.  The youth academy is entirely staffed by volunteers and as usual, every offer of help is much appreciated.  Contact Lisa McDonnell 078 5416 2123.
  • Killeavy branded replica team kit and leisure wear continues to be available each Monday night in the Youth Academy shop from 7.00 – 8.00pm.  Contact Susan Byrne on 028 3084 8008 with any queries regarding club kit.

Shane O’Neills

Seniors
Our seniors were back league action on Sunday afternoon against Pearse Ógs in Derrylecka playing fields but unfortunately the fell to a narrow three point defeat, 0 – 11 to 1 – 5. The Shanes had the wind at their backs in the first-half but they failed to take advantage of this with the sides going in at the break level, 0 – 2 to 0 – 2 with both of the Shanes scores coming from Paul O’Rourke frees. The Shanes had several good scoring opportunities in the opening period and had they taken some of them they would have had a healthy half-time lead. An Oisín Murphy point early in the second-half put the Shanes one in front but the Ógs got the next four points to put them firmly in control of the game. Paul O’Rourke got his third point of the match to reduce the deficit to two but the Armagh City side increased this five, hitting another three points in a row. Connaire Mackin replied for the Shanes but Pearse Ógs kept the score-board ticking over with their tenth point of the game to keep them five to the good but the Shanes got themselves right back into the game minutes later when Paul O’Rourke rose highest to flick a Connaire Mackin to the Ógs net. The Shanes were only two in arrears now and fought hard to get back on level terms but Pearse Ógs got the last point of the contest to claim the win, 0 – 11 to 1 – 5. The Shanes will look back on this game as one they could have got something out off and will undoubtedly rue the chances they missed in the first-half. Next up for the seniors is a league game against Dromintee which has been scheduled for next Friday evening, 3rd May, in Derrylecka playing fields.
Senior Reserves
Our senior reserves had their first league game of the year last Wednesday night against near neighbours Carrickcruppen. The first-half was tight enough affair with the Shanes trailing by just four points at the break, 3 – 2 to 1 – 4 but Carrickcruppen were the better side in the second-half and they ran out deserving winners. Scorers for the Shanes on the night were: C Austin 1 – 0, D Monaghan 0 – 3, M Smith 0 – 2, C O’Brien 0 – 1 and A Holland 0 – 1. Next up for the senior reserves is an away game against Culloville on Wednesday night and all players are asked to be at the club for 6.15pm.
Senior Girls
Our senior girls played their second league game of the year to Mullabrack last Wednesday evening in what was coach Ryan McConville’s first game in charge. The girls were a bit nervous early but they settled into the game and soon found themselves well in control of proceedings, scoring some great goals and points whilst putting in a tremendous performance in defence. The Shane’s continued to boss the game throughout the second-half and they ran out comprehensive winners in the end with all the girls who played contributing to the victory.
Minor Boys
Despite not having a league game last Monday night our minor boys took on Cavanakill Emmets in a challenge game. The Shanes played some good football on the night and they ran out deserving winners on the night.
U16 Boys
Our U16 boys travelled to Middletown last Thursday evening for their third league game of the year. The Shanes were slow to start the game and soon found themselves behind, with the home side still in front at the break. The Shanes were a much better side in the second-half but they left themselves with too much to do and it was Middletown who ran out winners.
U16 Girls
The U16 girls had the first league game of the year on Monday against Armagh Harps and great credit must go to all the girls for a fantastic performance and in doing so recording a very impressive and comprehensive win.
U14 Boys
Our U14s were in league action last Tuesday evening against St Bridget’s and they kept their recent good run of form going with another comprehensive win. The Shanes led from start to finish and were good value for their win. The U14s were also in friendly action on Saturday afternoon against Dromintee. The lads are back in action this Tuesday evening with an away game against Mullaghbawn, all players to be at the club for 6.00pm.
U14 Girls
Having been selected to represent Armagh in the All-Ireland Féile our U14 girls will be based in Lifford where they be hosted by local team, Naomh Padraig. To help fund the trip a small committee of mum’s was formed last Wednesday night to look at all sources and put forward ideas for raising funds.
U12s
Training for our U12 footballers takes place on Wednesday evenings at the club at 6.45pm. All boys and girls at this age group are requested to attend.
U12 Girls
The U12 girls got their first win of the year with victory over a good Tir na nÓg team at St. Pauls on Sunday evening. In a tight first half, Tir na nÓg struck first with a well taken goal whilst Brianna Mathers opened Shanes scoring from a free while Jade Beattie got a point before half-time. Points from Orlaith McArdle and Lia Robb drew the game level early in the second-half but the turning point in the game came when Jade Beattie was pulled down in the square and was awarded a penalty. Jade’s penalty was well saved but she got the rebound to give Shanes the lead for the first time. Brianna Mathers grabbed another point before the end as the defence held out well against the Óg’s forwards. For Shanes, Niamh Boylan was great as net minder, Orlagh McKenna and Abby Shields were the pick of the defence while Brianna Mathers caused a lot of problems for the Óg’s defence. The Shane’s scorers were J Beattie 1 – 1, B Mathers 0 – 2, O McArdle 0 – 1 and L Robb 0 – 1. Training continues on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6.30pm to 7.30pm at St. Pauls. We still need more players so anyone interested should contact Paci Magennis (077)17732086 or Paul McArdle (0035386)8372082. The next U12 game is against Crossmaglen on Sunday 5th May.

U10s & U8s
Our U10s and U8s both train now on Friday nights from 6.00pm to 7.00pm at St Colman’s College and all boys and girls at both these age groups are requested to attend.
U6s

St Patrick’s Cullyhanna

Armagh Senior League: St Patrick’s 0-10 Killeavy 1-7
A cold Sunday evening saw St Patrick’s Park host its first league fixture of the season as Killeavy visited Cullyhanna. It was the away side which settled much the stronger, kicking an early point then benefitting from slack marking to waltz through the Cullyhanna defence for a goal. It was a pity that it took a four point deficit to get Cullyhanna started but the introduction of Robbie Tasker invigorated the side who took control of the match in the central portion of the half. First Tasker assisted a Barry McConville point before Eugene Casey pointed a Cullyhanna free. A fantastic pointed effort from Aidan Nugent with the outside of his boot brought Cullyhanna within a point before Robbie Tasker levelled matters with a free. Robbie was again involved as Tony Donnelly edged St Pat’s in front while Cullyhanna’s sixth point in succession came from Eugene Casey after some good interplay with Tasker. Two points ahead and playing into a stiff breeze, St Pat’s looked in a great position but the concession of three late frees, all pointed by Killeavy, meant that the home side trailed by a point at the break.
Unfortunately from a Cullyhanna perspective, the wind seemed to die down a little in the second half and it was Killeavy who kicked the opening two points to lead by three. Paudie McCreesh kicked a fine score before Robbie Tasker edged Cullyhanna closer with a pointed free. Killeavy responded with a point. Eugene Casey reduced the margin to the minimum 7 minutes from time when profiting from a 45m kick which dropped short while the same player was on hand three minutes from time to kick the equalising point from a free after a foul on Ciaran McKeever. St Pat’s were on top in the latter stages but unfortunately squandered a succession of opportunities to snatch the victory as the match ended level on a scoreline of St Pat’s 0-10 Killeavy 1-7.
Cullyhanna will have been disappointed not to take both points from a home fixture in which they played the best quality of football on view. However errant passing and missed opportunities were too great a feature of the St Pat’s performance and there is plenty to work on for the campaign ahead. Kevin Toner and Niall McShane had strong games in defence while Robbie Tasker was at the heart of the vast majority of Cullyhanna’s successful attacking play.
Starting XV: Deaglan McArdle; Sean Connell, Kevin Toner, Micky Murray; Stephen Reel, Paudie McCreesh (0-1), Niall McShane; Barry McConville (0-1), Mal Mackin; Tony Donnelly (0-1), Ciaran McKeever, Gary McCooey; Ciaran Nugent, Eugene Casey (0-4), Aidan Nugent (0-1). Subs Used: Robbie Tasker (0-2), Conor Nugent
Armagh Junior League A:St Patrick’s II 0-10 Crossmaglen Rangers II 1-6This reserve derby encounter was a closely fought and nail biting affair played on one of Crossmaglen’s secondary pitches on Saturday evening. Crossmaglen edged in front with a couple of early frees but Shane McKeever soon responded in kind, bringing the sides level with two pointed frees of his own. 19 minutes into the match, John Mone’s fine effort brought the first point from play before a fantastic kick from a prohibitive angle from Peter O’Neill put him side two to the good. Crossmaglen responded with a point to put the minimum between the sides but Peter O’Neill had the final say of the half four minutes before the break with a great point from play.Cullyhanna led 0-5 to 0-3 but what had been a tetchy affair to that point was very much in the balance. St Pat’s made an authoritative start to the second period with both John Mone and Brendan Nugent pointing in the early stages. Crossmaglen managed a free before points from John Mone and Miceal Connolly gave the away side a commanding 5 point advantage 13 minutes from time. Crossmaglen were soon to rally however and when a seemingly innocuous punt forward dropped into the Cullyhanna net, the comeback was very much on. Two pointed frees from Crossmaglen levelled matters as the home side had all the momentum heading into the final stages. However full credit should go to the Cullyhanna lads who dug deep and showed some character, creating a scoring opportunity from a free just before the finish. Both distance and angle were against the kicker but veteran Shane McKeever showed nerves of steel to produce a magnificent kick which sailed over the Crossmaglen crossbar. The final whistle blew soon after to the delight of the St Pat’s side.

After what had been a disappointing start to the season, the Seconds side deserve great credit for the manner of their performance in what appeared a tricky fixture. Hopefully this can be used as a platform for the rest of the campaign. Anton McCooey had a fine match in the half-back line. Ironically given his impending nuptials, popular corner-back Conor McShane kept the shackles on his marker during the match but fell foul of his own teammates shortly after the final whistle. Peter O’Neill deserves commendation for his point scoring and also the ever accurate Shane McKeever while John Mone was dangerous up front throughout.

Starting XV: Fergal Murphy; Sean Nugent, Brendan Savage, Conor McShane; Anton McCooey, Peter McKeever, Sean O’Neill; Ciaran O’Neill, Peter O’Neill (0-2); Miceal Connolly (0-1), Cathal O’Neill, Genie McCooey; Shane McKeever (0-3), John Mone (0-3), Brendan Nugent. Subs Used: Patsy McKeever, Kevin Hoey.

Minor league: Harps 0-8 St. Patrick’s 2-13

Cullyhanna made it two out of two as they recorded a comfortable win over Armagh Harps in a game played at the College fields in Armagh on Monday evening. St. Pat’s got off to a great start when Shea Hoey racked up an impressive 1-3 in the first 10 minutes of the game. Harps came into it more after that as they exerted control at mid-field as the half progressed. However an Adam McQuillan goal late in the half emphasized Cullyhanna’s threat in front of goal as they went in with a healthy 2-8 to 0-6 advantage at the break.

Scores were hard to come by the second-half as both sides struggled to cope with the strong cross field wind. Although Harps threatened at times Cullyhanna always kept them at bay and restricted them to a few scores mainly from frees. In the end it was a very useful considering the team went into the game with some of their more experienced players unavailable due to injury. Overall a good team showing with an outstanding showing from 15 year of Shea Hoey whose tally of 1-9 played a major part in securing the points.

Team: Diarmaid McArdle, Diarmaid Murray, Phelim Savage, Cathal Donnelly, Phelim McArdle, Sean óg Irwin, Paraic Brecknell, Francis O’Rourke (0-1), Shane Conlon, Adam McQuillan (1-0), Gary Mackin (0-2), Niall Watters, Shea Hoey (1-9), Peter Quinn, Gareth Reel, Ryan Carville (0-1), Euan Conlon.

Under 14s

Minors

Due to a bereavement in the Dromintee club, this week’s minor match will now take place on Wednesday night in Cullyhanna at 7 15pm.

UNDER 12s

Our under 12 team had their first match of the season away to Pearse Ogs on Sunday past.  They turned in an impressive display with the whole squad contributing on the day.  Our midfield pairing of Padraig McLoughlin and Neil McCreesh dealt very well with a very physical Ogs midfield and launched numerous attacks with their ball winning ability.

The Ogs attack wasn’t given much room by some tenacious defending with Conor Lynch, Donal Conlon and Nathan Mackin to the fore.

The Cullyhanna attack worked space for themselves with some excellent passing movements.  Caolan Reavey, in particular, showed a great range of passing to complement his scoring touch with Cailim Mackin taking advantage to score four cracking points.  Top scorer on the day was Jack McAneney with six points.

Special mention must go to the under 10s within the squad.  Jamie Quinn, James McQuillan, Dara McGeeney and Gavin Duffy all have bright futures ahead of them.  The management expect that Shane McQuillan, Cain Carragher and the rest of the squad will build on this performance when the Go Games League starts next week.

RECREATIONAL FOOTBALL

A further fixture has been organised for the past greats of the club.  We are playing Tir naOg on Saturday the 11th of May at 7 o’clock in Armagh.  Anyone interested in playing please contact Gary McKeown (07989 850234) or Conor McAneney (07985 110960).

Wolfe Tones and St Enda’s Derrymacash

Camógaíocht/ Camogie
Our senior camogie team got their league campaign off to a great start with an emphatic victory over Lurgan side Clan na Gael. In spite of a number of players missing and the Clans unable to accommodate our request to move the game, St Enda’s led at half time on an impressive scoreline of 2-13 to 1-2. A gale blew up at half time and made the playing conditions much more difficult in the second half, but again the Derrymacash girls played very well and ran out resounding winners with the final score reading St Enda’s 7-17 Clan na Gael 1-4.
We hosted Clan na Gael on Saturday morning for a mini-camogie blitz with our Under 6s, Under 8s and Under 12s all playing against the Lurgan side. The Under 12s played particularly well with a great team performance and finished up convincing winners.
The club will be holding a celebration of camogie in Derrymacash for all players, mentors and supporters of St Enda’s Camogie Club, past and present on Saturday 25 May from 7pm. There will be an exhibition of photographs and memorabilia on the night and we are asking anyone with photos or memorabilia which we could borrow for the night to get in touch with us. A good night’s craic is guaranteed with Good Intentions providing music in the bar until late. Make sure you don’t miss this opportunity to celebrate the history of our camogie club, as we look forward to the future development of camogie in Derrymacash and north Armagh. Naomh Éanna abú

Peil/ Football
The senior footballers travelled to Middletown on Sunday for a tough tie in the Intermediate league. It was the home side who got the scoring underway before Niall Geoghegan was denied a penalty despite being well inside the small square. A free was however awarded and was duly converted. Further points from the Tones through Ryan McQuillan, Niall Geoghegan and Eamon McCann mover the visitors firther ahead, but Middletown took advantage of a mix-up in the Tones defence to score a rather fortuitous goal. The Tones however, responded well with John Toal converting a free, Peter Nugent getting on to the scoresheet and Ryan McQuillan hitting a point before he finished the ball to the Middletown net. Further points were shared between the two teams just before half time, with John Toal providing the Tones score. Half time Tones 1-8 Middletown 1-2. The second half was a scrappy affair with scores proving hard to come by, with the strong wind affecting both sides. Niall Geoghegan converted a free for the visitors and Peter Nugent added his second with Middletown claiming three further points to leave the final score Tones 1-10 Middletown 1-5. This was always going to be a difficult tie for the Tones and they will be happy with the two points, but know that they have a lot of work to do this week for the visit of Annaghmore to Derrymacash on Friday night.
Our B team lost their first game to Annaghmore on Wednesday 3-12 to 1-15. The boys played very well and were unlucky not to get at least a point out of the game against an Annaghmore team that included a number of their first team players. Our minors were well beaten by St Paul’s last Monday and hope for a better performance against Clan na Gael this week and against sarsfields in Derrytrasna next week. The Under 16s had a comfortable win in a challenge game against Ballymacnab on Thursday night. The Under 14s had a good win against Clan na Gael last Tuesday night 5-15 to 5-5. Well done to the Under 10s who won their two games against Clann Éireann on Snday morning. The Under 8s are away to Clan na Gael on Monday 29 April and host St Peter’s on Saturday at 11.45am.

Gaelic4Mothers continues on Friday evenings at the club from 7pm. Everyone is welcome to take part in the Gaelic4Mothers training sessions, which are a good way to keep fit as well as good craic.

Comhbhrón/Condolences
It is with deep regret that we learnt of the death of our neighbour and friend Marion Conway-Curran. A minute’s silence was held as a mark of respect for Marion before the senior football game in Middletown on Sunday and we would like to thank the referee and the Middletown team for facilitating this. We wish to express our sincere sympathies to Marion’s children, grandchildren and extended family circle at this sad time. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h-anam uasal.
