Granemore booked their place in the semi-finals of the Armagh senior championship thanks to a hard-fought victory over Mullaghbawn in Crossmaglen this afternoon (Saturday).
It’ll be the first time since 2019 the mid-Armagh side will contest a game in the last four of the senior championship.
The game was certainly not one for the purists but Mullaghbawn held the slenderest of leads (4-3) at the break – three frees from the left boot of Eddie English helping their cause.
Brendan Boylan opened the scoring for Granemore – their only score from play in the first half – before Jason O’Neill added two frees. It took Mullaghbawn 20-plus minutes to register and that was a 21-yard free.
However, the pendulum swung midway through the second half when Karl McQuaid scrabbled the ball over the line after a high speculative effort landed in the square. The introduction of Tony McClelland really gave Granemore a presence on the edge of the square. Marty Carr added another to extend that advantage.
The contest was still in the melting pot with just over 10 minutes to go but Kieran Grant was black-carded for a cynical foul well within scoring distance. Jason O’Neill duly obliged.
While Mullaghbawn chased the game late on, it never looked like anything other than a Granemore win, and it was the seasoned campaigner O’Neill who added the gloss to another fine afternoon.
