Tones hit right note against St Peter’s

THE senior footballers of Wolfe Tone and St Enda’s, Derrymacash, travelled to Clann Éireann on Sunday, where they were in championship action against Lurgan side St Peter’s.

The Tones got off to a brilliant start with a point from joint captain Niall Geoghegan. Ryan McQuillan made a run from one end of the field to the other and, after a rebound, James Lavery finished to the net to put the Tones four in front.

The lead was soon consolidated with points from Adam McKeever and two from Declan Lavery.

St Peter’s started to come into the game at this stage, winning a lot of ball at midfield and got two points, one from play and one from a free, to leave the half time score Tones 1-4 St Peter’s 0-2.

St Peter’s dominated the opening exchanges of the second half, claiming a score right from the throw in and adding a converted free. Declan Lavery, however, weighed in once more to steady the Tones.

St Peter’s pulled back another point to bring them to within three, but Adam McKeever and Finnian Moriarty stepped up for the Tones to increase the lead again. Another St Peter’s point was followed by numerous wides, a feature of the game, and as time slipped away James Lavery converted two frees to leave the Tones victors on a score of 1-10 to 0-7.

Well done to the Tones on a great performance, with special mention to Gerard O’Neill and to the defence who were on top throughout the game.

The Tones face Madden in the next round.

The seniors play their final league game against Silverbridge at home on Friday night.

Hard luck to the minor footballers, who lost to Madden on Monday evening 0-17 to 1-10. The Under 14s lost out to Aghagallon in a challenge game during the week. The two under 10 teams travelled to St Paul’s on Sunday morning, winning one game and losing the other.
