Transport Minister Danny Kennedy today announced a major £800,000 junction upgrade, resurfacing and realignment of the Friary Road and Newry Road junction in Armagh.
The scheme will be part-financed by Armagh City and District Council who has agreed to make a substantial contribution towards the cost.
Mr Kennedy said: “I am very pleased to be able to confirm proposals to upgrade this critical junction in Armagh city centre. I want to thank Armagh Council for working in partnership with us to allow delivery of this important scheme.
“Together with the resurfacing works currently taking place on Irish Street and a further scheme for Friary Road at a cost of some £500,000, this would represent a combined total investment of £1.3 million in road improvements in the area which is very good news for the City.
“We will now be able to coordinate these schemes to ensure any disruption is kept to a minimum, reduce costs and maximise the benefits to the public.
“I will also be seeking to manage these works with the sewer replacement scheme proposed for Armagh. The scheme will help to improve traffic management, pedestrian facilities and safety at this location.”
Design works are substantially complete and it is intended to go to contract for the junction upgrade in the coming weeks. It is hoped that subject to successful completion of the necessary process, including planning, that work could start in the summer.
