Fifty years of excellence and community spirit to be celebrated at St Oliver Plunkett’s PS

To celebrate their 50 year milestone, a week-long series of activities has been planned by the school

St. Oliver Plunkett’s Primary School, Ballyhegan are set to celebrate 50 years of educational excellence and community spirit!

The school first opened in 1975, welcoming boys and girls from Ballyhegan and Mullavilly within the Parish of Kilmore, fostering a safe, caring and nurturing environment.

As a proud Catholic school, St Oliver Plunkett’s puts every child at the forefront, encouraging each to find their unique brilliance, promoting a lifelong love of learning.

The school supports and challenges students to work to their full potential, developing their spiritual and emotional well-being while celebrating their academic, cultural and physical abilities.

By working together with families, inter-school partners and the wider community, the school guides the children to foster a sense of pride in their local community and encourages their active engagement in wider society for the benefit of others.

To celebrate their 50 year milestone, a week-long series of activities has been planned by the school.

A commemorative mass will kick off the celebrations on Monday, April 7 at 7pm which will be led by Archbishop Eamonn Martin at St Patrick’s Church, Stonebridge.

The mass will then be followed by a reception of light refreshments and a photographic exhibition to showcase the school’s history and many memories at the adjacent Pastoral Centre.

The school warmly invites all members of the local community to join in the festivities.

The School Council, including pupils from P5-P7, have organised a 70s themed fun-day on Friday, April 11. Expect a fun-filled day with fancy dress, a disco, a pop-up tuck shop, bouncy castles, 70s focused class-based lessons and a whole school YMCA dance performance.

The school’s Well-Being Team have been completing a mindfulness art project over the last year. In preparation for the anniversary, the team suggested creating a large art piece which would be showcased at the ceremony.

Sinead McDermott from ‘The Art and Design Factory’, was commissioned to create a whole-school art installation, with every child contributing to this peace.

The artwork is now proudly on display at the school, acknowledging both the 400 year anniversary of the death of the school’s Patron, St Oliver Plunkett, while also serving as a visual reminder to visitors at the school of these events.

This anniversary is a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with old friends, make new ones and celebrate this wonderful school community.

Whether you are a former student or staff member, a current or past pupil, a parent/guardian, or simply a friend of St Oliver Plunkett’s, you are invited to join the 50th Anniversary celebrations.

Together, let’s honour the past, celebrate the present, and look forward to a bright future.
