Pensioner hands

A 47-year-old Co Armagh woman has today been jailed for stealing £30k from vulnerable man she cared for.

Nicola Beattie, from from Gilpin Park in Craigavon, has been sentenced at Laganside Crown Court to two years and two months, half to be spent in custody and the remaining half on license, for charges of fraud by abuse of position.

The injured party is now sadly deceased but was at the time a vulnerable adult living in sheltered accommodation who received Home Care.

In summer 2017, Beattie, his allocated carer, was given control of his debit card to pay for his groceries, cleaning and household bills.

In 2022, the injured party’s daughter discovered his bank balance had reduced to £21.59 by the end of 2021, leaving an estimated £30,148.68 unaccounted for.

A joint police and Social Services investigation commenced, resulting in Beattie being reported for fraud.

Detective Inspector Jane McCallum said: “This was a calculated abuse of trust in which the defendant exploited her position to take advantage of a vulnerable man for her own financial gain.

“She was entrusted to act in his best interests, but instead abused that trust and fraudulently obtained more than £30,000 from him. Her actions represent a significant betrayal of someone who was vulnerable and should have been protected from harm.

“Fraud of this nature goes far beyond the financial loss. It can have a profound and lasting emotional impact, particularly where an offender has deliberately exploited a position of trust.

“I hope today’s sentencing provides some measure of reassurance to the victim’s family. The Police Service of Northern Ireland remains committed to safeguarding vulnerable people and will thoroughly investigate reports of financial abuse and pursue those responsible through the courts.”
