Major transformation work could reshape the entire area of around Armagh’s historic Mall, over the next 12 months.
A number of projects across the borough have been earmarked for remodelling, with public realm works at Armagh Courthouse and Gaol Square set to completely reinvigorated the area.
The news comes as the continued wait for some movement on the multi-million pound hotel planned for the old gaol goes on, while proposed transformation at the opposite end of the Mall follows in the wake of the official announcement to close the courthouse this summer.
Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council officials recently met with the Department of Social Development to review work completed to date, as well as to consider possible opportunities for future pipeline projects within the area.
However, at this early stage, it remains unclear exactly what work will be carried out.
Along with public realm works at the courthouse and Gaol Square, various other projects have been identified with DSD for inclusion in a proposed ‘Transition Plan’.
An Armagh and Lurgan Evening Economy Strategy will fall under this umbrella as will Banbridge and Portadown Linkages.
Beyond that, 2017/18 could see the relocation of Armagh post office, with work at St Malachy’s and the Acheson site in the city, also expected.
Central Craigavon could also have a small railway station (halt) installed as Council continue to look into its feasibility. A halt is a small station, usually unstaffed or with very few staff, and with few or no facilities. In some cases, trains stop only on request.
Other long-term plans include the relocation of the Southern Regional College, however, Armagh’s wait for a new build continues.
Last month, Learning Minister Stephen Farry basically said Armagh will get its college when he gets the money.
