Armagh man who was about to begin community service for drink driving involved in collision

An Armagh man who is due to begin a community service order for drink driving has been disqualified for careless driving in a separate offence.

Paul Cartmill, 47, of Annahugh Hill, pleaded guilty at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court on Friday to driving without due care or attention and failing to remain and report an accident.

The incident occurred on November 5, last year, when police were contacted by a man regarding an accident on the Loughgall Road, Armagh.

He claimed he had stopped at a junction to turn right when the defendant, in a car behind him, collided with his bumper.

Court heard Cartmill did stop at the time and spoke to the man, however, he did not exchange any insurance details.

The defendant was spoken to by police on November 26, and when asked why the accident occurred Cartmill answered: “I was not paying attention”.

Defence counsel told the court the defendant was due to begin a community service order and had lost his licence during a recent drink-driving case in Armagh.

District Judge Bernie Kelly disqualified the defendant from driving for six months and ordered him to pay a fine of £175, along with the offender’s levy of £15 within 12 weeks.
