An Armagh man accused of a range of offences including multiple rapes, a sexual assault and trespass with the intention to commit sexual offences against a woman is to face the Crown Court.
The 24-year-old appeared before Armagh Magistrates’ Court, sitting at Newry Courthouse on Tuesday, for the purposes of a preliminary enquiry (PE) – the legal process during which a case is referred to the higher court.
The man, who cannot be named in order to protect the victim, is charged with trespass with intention to commit sexual offences, attempted choking with intention to commit an indictable offence, two counts of rape, sexual assault by penetration, attempted rape, threats to kill and two counts of criminal damage.
It is alleged that the offences took place on August 14 and 15 of last year at an address in the Armagh district.
Prosecution submitted that based on the papers before the court there was a prima facie case to answer.
Defence counsel made no contrary submissions.
District Judge Anne Marshall, satisfied there was a prima facie case to answer, released the defendant on his own bail of £500, to appear at Newry Crown Court for arraignment on November 1.
