Armagh man told police he ‘couldn’t afford’ insurance when stopped for careless driving

An Armagh motorist told police he ‘couldn’t afford’ car insurance after he was stopped for careless driving, a court has heard.

Oisin Murphy (20), was fined £400 and handed six penalty points at a hearing before Armagh Magistrates Court, sitting at Newry Courthouse on Tuesday.

He was charged with driving without insurance and driving without care and attention.

The court heard on February 15 this year, at around 7.35am, police were travelling on the Dobbin Road in Armagh when they observed a BMW overtake another vehicle on the brow of a hill.

Police stopped the driver, who identified himself as the defendant, with a system check revealing he was not insured.

When asked why this was the case, he stated he “couldn’t afford “car insurance.

Murphy, who already had three points on his licence, was cautioned for careless driving and driving without insurance, admitting that his driving fell below standard.

District Judge Anne Marshall stated Murphy lacked any previous record, was employed and had entered an early plea at his first court appearance.

She added: “I am concerned that he’s 20 and doesn’t think that he needs insurance.”
