Tributes have been paid to an Armagh bowler, regarded as “one of the greatest road bowling men to grace the roads”.
Jim Cullen passed away on February 12 in Orchard Lodge Care Home surrounded by his loving family.
He was known far and wide in road bowling circles. More than just a friendly face, Jim was a constant source of wisdom for those coming up through the ranks.
Leading tributes to the “phenomenon” that was Jim, Road Bowls in Ireland live-streaming service said: “No words can do this legend justice but we will try.
“Jim Cullen no stranger to being a phenomenon himself throughout his road bowling career right up to veteran levels was a bowling man through and through.
“He provided not only guidance, strength and determination to those he supported, especially his grandchildren as they come through the ranks and seeing them lift Ulster and All Ireland titles I know was tremendous moments for Jim, his heart full of pride.
“He was a lifelong friend to not only myself but the entire road bowling community and I would like to thank him for the memories I hold dear and proud to call him a friend.
“Jim enjoyed always his trips to Cork and the craic was always mighty when in his company.
“On behalf of everyone here on Road bowls in Ireland, the Smith and Bowen families we would like to extend our sincerest condolences to all the Cullen family at this sad time.
“Jim will live on in our hearts and memories as one of the greatest road bowling men to grace the roads. May his gentle soul rest in peace.”
Prominent Cork-based, Ból Chumann Uladh also sent their sincere condolences to the family and friends of the late Jim Cullen, sharing a photo of a “proud moment” with his grandson, Jake after his Junior B All-Ireland win in Ballincurrig 2023 [pictured above].
They added: “A familiar figure on our roads for many years. A bullet man through and through. May his gentle soul rest in peace.”
A death notice described Jim as the beloved husband of Nora, loving father of Patrick, Kevin, Sheelagh Murphy and Nuala Rafferty.
His funeral will take place on Monday in St. Patrick’s Cathedral for 11am Mass, with burial afterwards in St. Patrick’s Cemetery.
