A Co Armagh man and woman accused of causing grievous bodily harm to a child under 16 will face Crown Court proceedings next month.
Both 20-year-olds appeared at Armagh Magistrates’ Court, sitting at Newry on Tuesday, for the purpose of a preliminary enquiry (PE), the legal process during which a case is referred to the higher court.
The pair – who have not been named to protect the child’s identity – are charged with grievous bodily harm with intent, causing or allowing a child to suffer serious physical harm and cruelty to a child under 16.
As the charges were read, it was heard that these offences are alleged to have occurred between January 1 and January 25, 2018, with a single alleged female injured party.
Appearing in the dock, the defendants made no objection to the holding of a preliminary enquiry.
Prosecution submitted that based on the papers before the court there was a prima facie case to answer.
Defence counsel for both made no contrary submissions.
Deputy District Judge Philip Mateer said that he was satisfied there was a prima facie case to answer.
The defendants were released on their own bail of £400 appear before Newry Crown Court on May 18 for arraignment.
