A Bulgarian national who told police “I don’t know why it was cancelled” in reference to his insurance has been given a fine and six penalty points on his licence.
Valcho Sashev, 31, of Abbey Street, Armagh, appeared at city Magistrates’ last Tuesday charged with driving whilst uninsured.
The incident occurred at around 7 pm on June 12, last year, the defendant, driving a Nissan Primera, was stopped by police in the car park of the Spire shopping centre in Armagh.
Police found that the car’s previous insurance policy had been cancelled.
When asked about this by police Sashev stated: “I don’t know why it was cancelled”.
Defence counsel told the court that the defendant had moved to Northern Ireland in 2016, adding that since then he has always been in employment.
Court heard that his current job was in a meat factory and that Sashev had no criminal record in this country.
District Judge Paul Copeland asked defence if he had now insured the car.
They explained that the car had been seized but the defendant was now insured in a new vehicle.
Judge Copeland ordered Sashev to pay a fine of £200, along with the offender’s levy of £15, to be paid within 12 weeks.
The defendant also received six penalty points on his licence.
